Edité par Amsterdam: Marc Michel Rey [Discours: Geneva, Du Villard], 1762 & 1758, 1762
Vendeur : Peter Harrington. ABA/ ILAB., London, Royaume-Uni
Edition originale
First edition, Dufour's variant B, the definitive version of the Contrat Social, Rousseau's greatest book. It is bound here with the first edition in book form of Rousseau's Discours sur l' conomie politique, first published in 1755 in the Encyclopédie, volume V. The story of the first edition of the Contrat Social is somewhat complicated. The letters sent by Rousseau to his publisher, Marc Michel Rey, establish that variant A was abandoned in favour of variant B, which became the definitive version. The changes the author required concern the title page and the last pages. The title vignette of variant A copies depicts Justice, but Rousseau wrote to Rey asking for a vignette of Liberty. It was to be based on the vignette that had been used in Rousseau's Discours sur l'inégalité (1755), although he found the illustration distasteful, as it made the allegorical figure look like "une grosse joufflue". Rousseau subsequently found the title page too crowded, hence the move in variant B of the first half of the title ("Du Contract Social") to the half-title, where it is followed by a semicolon. Additionally, the 24-line note on civil marriage at the end of the text was removed in variant B, thus suppressing page 324, due to fears that it might cause the book to be censored in France. "The Contract Social remains Rousseau's greatest work. With no particular learning, no gift for logic, and a total lack of practical experience, he yet contrived to write a work of compelling eloquence. His work had the most profound influence on the political thinking of the generation following its publication" (PMM). Contrat Social: Dufour 133; En français dans le texte 162; Tchemerzine V, 543; Printing and the Mind of Man 207. Discours: Dufour 68; Higgs 1627; Tchemerzine X, 33 (b). Two works bound in one volume, octavo (188 x 120 mm). Contemporary polished marbled calf, spine elaborately gilt-tooled in compartments with red label and raised bands, marbled endpapers, red edges. Contrat Social: engraved title vignette of Liberty by Boily after Bolomey. Discours: woodcut title vignette with motto "Labor improbus omnia vincit". To both: engraved head- and tailpieces, initials. Lightly rubbed, professional restoration at spine ends, boards superficially marked, spine label chipped, contents crisp and evenly browned, with sporadic foxing and a few faint patches of damp stain, contemporary ownership signature on title page of Contrat Social, and some brown marks to pp. 17-22 of same. Overall in very good condition.

Edition originale
First edition, Dufour's variant B. The Contrat Social is Rousseau's greatest book and, for its impact on liberal and republican - and especially French revolutionary - doctrine, one of the most important single works in the history of political philosophy. The story of the first edition of the Contrat Social is somewhat complicated. The letters sent by Rousseau to his publisher, Marc Michel Rey, establish that variant A was abandoned in favour of variant B, which became the definitive version. The changes the author required concern the title page and the last pages. The title vignette of variant A copies depicts Justice but Rousseau wrote to Rey asking for a vignette of Liberty based on the one that had been used in his Dicours sur l'inégalité (1755), although he found the illustration distasteful, as it made the allegorical figure look like "une grosse joufflue". Rousseau subsequently found the title page too crowded, hence the move in variant B of the first half of the title ("Du Contract Social") to the half-title, where it is followed by a semicolon. Fearing it might cause the book to be censored in France the 24-line note on civil marriage at the end of the text was removed in variant B, thus suppressing p. 324. "The Contract Social remains Rousseau's greatest work. With no particular learning, no gift for logic, and a total lack of practical experience, he yet contrived to write a work of compelling eloquence (.) His work had the most profound influence on the political thinking of the generation following its publication" (PMM). Dufour 133; En Français dans le texte, 162; Tchemerzine V, 543; Printing and the Mind of Man, 207. Octavo (216 x 123 mm). Recent tree calf to style, double-rule gilt border to sides, gilt roll decoration to board edges, spine decorated gilt in compartments, red morocco label, marbled endpapers. Engraved title vignette by B. Bolomey, with the name of the printer (C. Boily) indistinct as usual. Pale tidemark to lower outer corner, more noticeable in places, occasional very light spotting and the odd mark; a very tall copy with untrimmed lower and fore edges, attractively and sympathetically bound to style.

Woodcut and typographical ornament throughout. 12mo (160 x 95mm). [8], 283, [1]pp (lacking final two blanks). Contemporary quarter speckled sheep with paste-paper covered boards, with corners of ?different material laid under paste paper, spine simply gilt in compartments with title lettered in gilt on red label, edges stained yellow (wear to calf on upper board, minor chipping to headcap, paper rubbed and worn, corners worn). Amsterdam [Geneva]: Marc-Michel Rey [Nicolas Gallay], An uncommon counterfeit edition of Rousseau's most famous work, printed ten years after the first edition in 1762. This text includes the note on civil marriage that was, at the request of the author himself, suppressed in the later variant of the first edition (Dufour's Type B) for fear of censorship. Also present at the end of this volume is a fictional letter from the author, 'Lettre.qui contient sa rénonciation à la Societe Civile', signed 'J. J. Rousseau, homme civilisé.mais à présent, Orang Outang'; it has been attributed variously to Pierre Firmin de Lacroix (Quérard; Barbier, Notice Bibliographique, no.224) and Klinglin (Leigh, p. 58). Surviving correspondence by the printer of the first edition, Marc-Michel Rey, indicates that pirate copies of Rousseau's text had already appeared by the end of August 1762, just five months after his first edition came off the press. By 1563, just a year later, Leigh estimates that there were already at least fifteen editions of this text in circulation. the number of pirated editions and reprints that appeared so shortly after the first edition are a testament to its almost instantaneous recognition as a rallying cry for the equality of all men and its role in the development of revolutionary feeling in France. Dufour, 141. Barbier, Notice Bibliographique (4th ed.), no.224. Leigh, Unsolved Problems, p.58. OCLC: CSU Northridge, Princeton. UK: Cambridge, Oxford.
