Voeneunt Antwerpiae in pingui gallina Arnoldo Berkmâno. ({Colophon} Excusum Antuerpiae opera Aegidij Copenij. Anno à Christo nato. 1540.)4to [233 x 160 mm ] of 62 leaves (Sabin mentions 61 leaves), complete with the leaf with the mark with text printed on the front. Old half-vellum. --- Third Latin edition. The first French translation will only be published a few years later. Brunet, I, 342 ; Van Ortroy, Bibli. de l'?uvre de Pierre Apian, n° 31 ; Sabin, 1745.Famous work illustrated with numerous and beautiful woodcuts, 5 volvelles with mobile parts on the verso of leaves X, XI (the mobile part is missing here), verso of leaf XIII, recto of leaves XXIX and XLV.The mobile parts notably show the motions of planets, and allow the deduction of longitudes, method that Apianus was one of the first to discover and that was used until the 19th century. The author of the work, Petrus Apianus, Latinized name of Bienewith (1495-1552), astronomer and geographer, was from 1520, teacher of mathematics and astronomy at Ingolstradt University, a position that he wouldn't leave, despite Emperor Charles V's very seducing offers, who ennobled him. Apianus was the first to suggest the method used for terrestrial longitudes, consisting in first observing the distance from the moon to one fixed star near the ecliptic and to follow the subsequent motions of the moon with regard to this star. His pupil Gemma Frisius, mathematician and teacher of Mercartor and Jean de Rojas, corrected the text and added significant additions under his own name.Contrary to what Sabin mentions, we could establish that no map is required in the 1540 edition of the Cosmography.According to van Ortroy (Bibliographie de l'?uvre de Pierre Apian, 1902), this map was first published in the first French edition (1544 ; van Ortroy, n°33), then in a Dutch edition (van Ortroy, n°35). The first Latin edition to contain this map is the 1545 edition (van Ortroy, n°36).Beautiful wide-margined.

#Antverpiae ( Antwerpen ) , Apud haeredes Arnoldi Birckmanni, printed by Aegidius van Diest (in colophon), 1564, in-4°, 21 x 16 cm, (4)nn pp (title with large woodcut globe) + 128 pp (numbered fol.1-64) + (3)nn pp (tabella) + (1)(bl), with 45 woodcuts in the text, a double page worldmap (Shirley 96) and 4 volvelles (complete). Bound in brown coloured and blindtooled vellum, spine renewed. Nice complete copy , and with, which is very rare, the four volvelles or Apian wheels in perfect shape and absolutely complete. The only negative remark to be made for completeness sake is that the worldmap has been very slightly shaven at the top, resulting in the loss of the head of a few letters. Bound in at the end is '' Himmels lauffs wirckung und natuerliche influentz der Planeten, Gestirn und Zeychen.''. Frankfurt, 1564, haer. Christian Egenolff. (8)nn pp + 108 pp, with woodcut ills. Unfortunately this book lacks four leaves ( Cii , Ei, Oiii and Yiiii). (USTC 663722). The first edition of Apianus' major work on astronomy , geography and cartography was published in Landshut in 1524. In 1533 was published in Antwerp a reworked edition incorporating the triangulation method developped by Gemma Frisius which opened the way to modern cartography. Indeed the first map with accurate distances was made in the Southern Low Countries based upon triangulations made by Gemma Frisius who climbed the Sint-Rombauts cathedral tower in Mechelen and started measuring the distances to Lier, Antwerpen, Gent , Brussel, Bergen op Zoom, Leuven. (Explanation on pages 51-53). USTC 404413 (Apian) .§.

4to (8 1/4 x 6 in.; 51.4 x 15.2 cm.). Title-page with large woodcut of a globe. Woodcut geographical and astronomical diagrams throughout, including four WITH FINE MOVABLE VOLVELLES on C2v, D1r (3 volvelles and thread pointer), I1r (3 volvelles), 2A2v (2 volvelles) (C3v without thread pointer), and with a fine folding world map, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials; missing front free endpaper; some pale dampstaining. Contemporary calf, front board with wide blind-stamped border with centerpiece, spine in 4 compartments with 5 raised bands; worn with minor loss on foot of spine, recased preserving most of the original binding. Apianus' "Cosmographia" was first published in 1524, and so popular that it was published in twenty-nine editions before 1600. It contains a reduced version of Apianus celebrated cordiform world map "Charta Cosmographica" after Waldseemuller s map of 1507, which was first included in the edition of 1545. Apianus was a professor of mathematics, holding chairs at Ingolstadt and Innsbruck, and a great astronomer. These skills combined with his interest in geography led to the establishment of his own printing press in Landshut. North America is depicted as a narrow stretch of land extending almost eastwards. Cuba and Hispaniola are shown as huge islands and the Mountains of the Moon considered the source of the River Nile. A 'truncated' cordiform projection is used which prevents the south polar regions being represented. The map is bordered by signs of the zodiac and the Ptolemaic climatic zones. Zeus and Mars, wearing the coats of arms of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, are shown atop the map while wind-heads at the south represent the traditional believed plague-bearing nature of those winds. The map is highly decorative but also an important milestone in the history of cartography as it is ONE OF THE EARLIEST MAPS TO SHOW A REPRESENTATION OF AMERICA, or the name itself. "Climata Australia" appears in the woodcut on page 15, and in the left-hand margin of the map. This edition of the "Cosmographia" has been enlarged by Apianus student, Frisius Gemma, and was first published in 1529, and is now further enlarged to include material by le Docteur Francisque Lopez de Gomara concerning America ("Situs ac Descriptio Novi Orbis, seu Indiarum Occidentalium" pages 168-187) originally published in the Spanish edition, Antwerp, 1575. Gemma was a gifted mathematician, cartographer, maker of fine scientific instruments as well as Apianus s student. His edition of Apianus s "Cosmographia" "was one of the most popular texts of the time and was translated into all major European languages" (DSB). It includes Gemma s description of how triangulation is used in surveying and mapping first published in 1533: "the first to propose - and illustrate - the principle of triangulation as a means of carefully locating places and accurately mapping areas" (DSB). PROVENANCE: Royal supra libros on the front and back covers. REFERENCES: Dictionary of Scientific Biography.

Apianus and Frisius discuss latitude and longitude and their determination, the earth's climatic zones, maps, surveying, triangulation, and give a brief description of the continents, including the New World. The illustrations include a folding cordiform world map. The ingenious volvelles with their moving dials and pointers clearly illustrate the position and movement of celestial bodies. With a few small marginal tears, chips or excisions, one at the foot of the title-page very slightly affecting the border of the woodcut and one at the head of the title-page removing an old owner's inscription, and browned water stains at the foot throughout and at the head of the last 5 quires.l Adams A1284; Belg. En Anvers, por Juan Bellero al Aguila de Or, 1575, 4to (210 x 170mm), contemporary limp vellum, with (2) numerous woodcuts, including 4 volvelles with moveable parts, and this edition with the fine folding map of the world that includes America. The second of only two Spanish Text Editions, but the First to Include Excerpts from Francisco Lopez De Gomara and Jeronimo Girava, and a long description of Iceland abridged from the 1574 Latin edition. An important edition by Gemma Frisius with the cordiform world map after Waldseemuller that first appeared in a Frisius edition of 1544. It was with Frisius additions that the popularity of the Cosmographia soared. The manual became a highly respected work on astronomy and navigation that was to see over forty reprints in 14 languages and that remained popular until the end of the 16th century. Although one of the reasons for the book s enormous popularity was undoubtedly its discussion of the newly discovered lands in the New World, available in all editions. Another was the book s inclusion of ingenious volvelles or paper devices which enabled one to solve practical mathematical problems relating to time, the calendar, astronomy and astrology. Apianus manual is divided into two main parts; one discussing the principles of cosmography, the other providing cosmographical data, e.g. a general geographical description of four continents, and a table of 1417 places with their coordinates. Generally speaking it teaches its readers four things: (1) it provides a brief explanation of essential concepts of astronomy and geography; (2) it explains how to find latitude, longitude and time with mathematical instruments, (3) it provides arithmetical methods for converting differences in coordinates to distances, and (4) it explains how to draw a cosmographical map. Among the instruments depicted in the work is an armillary sphere, portable time telling devices, including a diptych and nocturnal, annulus astronomicus or astronomical rings and an astrolabe. The Cosmographia also incorporates five volvelles, i.e. paper instruments with moving parts. The first of these is a horizon instrument (Ci verso). This is a simple volvelle demonstrating the relationship between the local horizon, the zenith, the polar axis and the equator. The second volvelle is a circular calendar without moveable parts (Cii verso). The outer scale shows the Zodiac, each sign divided into 30 degrees. The lower left quadrant of the inner disc can be used to tell the time in unequal hours, which were widely used in the 16th century. Because unequal hours divided both day and night into twelve hours each, these hours varied in length with the seasons, as do day and night. The right quadrant shows a shadow square, a proportional measuring device often used to measure heights at a distance. The third volvelle (Civ verso), called Ptolemy s Instrument by Apianus, is an altitude sun dial, which can be used to tell time in any latitude, hence is a universal instrument. It also tells the times of sunrise and sunset and gives the lengths of day and night in any latitude. The fourth volvelle is a terrestrial astrolabe (Hiii) equipped with a geographical or map-plate. This exclusively cosmographical variant of the age-old astrolabe indicated the latitude and longitude of a region, the movement of the sun as seen from the earth, and the relative time in different parts of the earth. The fifth volvelle is a lunar clock (Oi), which in conjunction with a sundial, can be used to determine time at night. In use, the inner disc is set to show the current phase of the moon through the window. After determining the hour angle of the moon (with a sundial used as a moondial) and setting the lunar dial of the volvelle to that hour angle, one can find the location of the sun, hence ascertain the time at night. A fine unsophisticated copy in its original binding.
