Illustrated with diagrams and engravings. 5.75 X 8.75 inches. Original owner's name with date ,1886, on the front pastedown in ink. A good copy with the back strip missing portions from the top and bottom of the spine, rubbed at corners and the front cover split from the spine along the edge for about 2 inches.

A detailed guide to the implements, laws and ground lay out used in croquet. Jacques was a major London dealer in all things croquet and the last ten pages are given over to advertising his wares. Second edition. 8vo. 48pp. Engraved frontispiece, 2 full-page illustrations, others in the text. Original racing green sand-grained cloth with gilt vignette of lady croquet player "taking croquet" to front. Cloth rubbed, spine repaired with tape.

Cloth Card Covers. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. No date author or edition details given. Probably produced and published in the mid 1860s by John Jaques for the Earl of Eglinton. Green cloth card covers blindstamped decorative borders on front and rear boards with gilt vignette of lady croquet player with title beneath in gilt. 56 pages including 7 pages of price lists for croquet games and equipment. The book is well illustrated with some full page engraved illustrations and smaller figures in the text portraying items of croquet equipment and diagrams etc. Engraved frontispiece showing participants at Eglinton Castle Croquet with the castle in the background. 4. X 6.5 inches.A very good sound copy with minor wear to the cloth at the board edges.

A very good, clean, tight copy in very original condition. Original mauve embossed card/cloth covers with very bright gilt embossed vignette of a lady playing golf to the front card cover and embossed 'new edition' with the gilt embossed price of one shilling. Original yellow endpapers. Steel engraved frontispiece, another full page steel engraved plate - both depicting scenes of people playing croquet. No inscriptions. Loss of the bottom 5 cm of spine strip leaving the covers and the first leaf or two slightly free at the tail. Loss of 0.5cm of spine strip at the head. One circular soil mark around 5mm in diameter affecting a couple of pages. Light foxing to the endpapers - very slight and scattered elsewhere. A slight crease to the lower corner of the rear cover and slight rubbing to some of the peripheries of the cover - heavier to the backstrip. A very original and given the lightness of materials used in its production, in our opinion a very well preserved copy.
