Foreword I by Merle A. Tuve. Foreword II by Adm. George R. Hussey, Jr. DJ has some wear, soiling and small tear at spine. Some edge soiling. Ralph Belknap Baldwin (June 6, 1912 - October 23, 2010) was an American planetary scientist known for his work on lunar craters, beginning in the late 1940s. His book, The Face of the Moon made the case for the impact nature of lunar craters. He published The Measure of the Moon in 1963. Prior to his lunar work he was Senior Physicist at Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory during World War II working on the Proximity fuze. In 1947 he began working for Oliver Machinery Company. In 1970 he became president of the company and chairman of the board in 1982. He retired in 1984. Baldwin was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He attended the University of Michigan, receiving his B.S. in 1934, M.S. in 1935, and Ph.D. in 1937, on the "spectroscopic study of novae". After graduation, he taught astronomy at the University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania, and Northwestern University from 1935 through 1942. During World War Two Baldwin helped to develop the radar proximity fuze. He published a history of proximity fuze development in 1980 entitled The Deadly Fuze. During his work on the radio proximity fuze he was awarded the Army Chief of Ordnance Award and the U.S. Naval Bureau Ordnance Award (1945). In 1947 he was a recipient of the Presidential Certificate of Merit. In World War 2, for the first time in history, the outcome was affected by weapons unknown at the time hostilities began. The proximity fuze has not had the kind of fanfare given to the atomic bomb, but it was used with deadly effectiveness during the war, particularly in the air defence of Britain. It played a critical role in protecting the U.S. Fleet from Japanese air attack in the Pacific. Incredibly, at the war's end, the military leaders of Germany and Japan were still unaware of its existence and, in fact, considered such a development impractical. For years, artillerymen had dreamed of a fuze that could sense the presence of a target and detonate automatically at the optimum effective distance. Such a fuze would greatly simplify the three-dimensional problem of intercepting fast-flying aircraft. The greatest fear--that the enemy would recover duds and copy them--was, fortunately, never realized. The secret was kept, and this new tactical weapon played its decisive role in the Allied victory. This book is a technical history of the fuze device used by the United State military during World War II, which enabled bombs to explode when targets such as planes were near, enhancing accuracy. Developed in secret, the device was used against the Japanese and German forces, both of which were not aware of the technology. This work includes a look at its technology, the secrecy surrounding the project.
