Edition originale
plus 5 fldg. b/w plates, illus., diags., tbls., bibls., quarter calf with gold stamping, marbled boards. SECOND EDITION. The author was a leading Enlightenment savant of colonial Mexico, producing various works on lunar and solar eclipses, the aurora borealis, and Mexican antiquities. The main text and illustrations deal with the discovery of the so-called Aztec Calendar Stone and of the massive and frightening statue of the earth goddess, Coatlicue, during a street paving project in 1790. The first edition was by Felipe de Zúñiga y Ontiveros in 1792. This 2nd edition includes notes by Carlos Maria Bustamante and a biography of the author and is augmented with unpublished texts by Gama in response to scientist José Antonio Alzate y Ramirez whose severe criticism challenging and discrediting the author's archaeological findings and descriptions were published in the "Gaceta de México" on the 26 of June, 1792. Palau, 135588. (fldg. plates repaired, some marginal pencil notations in front endpaper and margins, ex-libris stamp "Alberto Mascareñas", o/w v.g. copy).

Second edition. Quarto, 20 x 13cm, pp [2], viii, 114, 148; followed by 5 folding engraved plates. Antonio de Leon y Gama (1735 - 1802) was an important, and virtually self-taught, scientist in Mexico who came to occupy a professorship at the School of Mines in Mexico City, wrote on a novel treatment of cancer, tutored the viceroy in astronomy, and with this book on the discovery of the great Aztec Calendar Stone, wrote the first serious book on archaeology in Mexico. The second edition is considered the better edition, because it contains considerably more material than the first of 1792. In 1790, during the paving of the great central plaza, the zocalo, in the city of Mexico, they came upon the huge calendar stone and an enormous statue of the goddess Coatlicue. They had been buried some 18 inches below ground by the Aztecs as the Spaniards and allies were beseiging the city, and they lay there undiscovered for 270 years. The author described the discovery of the stone and speculated on its significance, how it might have functioned, as well as well as other objects then known from the prehispanic period, particularly the statue of the goddess Coatlicue. Notes were supplied by Carlos Maria de Bustamante, another important Mexican scholar of the generation after Leon y Gama, as well as a biography of the author and some of his hitherto unpublished works. These comprise the entire second part, that was not included in the first edition. Palau [135588]:"es preferible esta segunda edition." Sabin [40060] Very nice copy indeed, in a half dark red morocco binding over pebbled boards, of the period, with gilt panels, fleurons, and titling on the spine. The plates are in excellent condition. Fine copy.
