Paperback. Etat : Very Good. William Russell's despatches to The Times revolutionised war reporting, and hence the public's perception of war. Each piece was written with a bludgeoning honesty, a refusal to compromise and with the meticulous detail of someone who cared deeply for what they were doing. From the first sailing of the expedition, to the final surrender of Sebastopol, Russell witnessed the battles of the Alma, Inkerman, Balaklava and the Tchernaya. He saw the tragic charge of the Light Brigade and the carnage at the Malakoff and the Redan. His descriptions are graphic, and still come across as extraordinarily modern. The despatches allowed the public to read about the reality of warfare, diminishing the distance between the home front and remote battlefields. Within the space of just a few months, Russell became a national figure in Britain. Shocked and outraged, the public's backlash from his reports led the Government to vastly improve soldiers' living standards and inspired Florence Nightingale to lead 38 volunteer nurses to Balaklava to improve sanitation for the wounded soldiers. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

A fine copy in a near-fine, unclipped dust jacket, one minute hole to the jacket along the front spine hinge. "William Howard Russell's despatches covering the Crimean war are one of the classics of war reporting as well as being a mine of source material for historians. More than this; they are in a great tradition of journalism, for it was through their publication in The Times that the British public was eventually made aware of the mismanagement of the army." More than this; they are in a great tradition of journalism, for it was through their publication in The Times that the British public was eventually made aware of the mismanagement of the army and the terrible conditions to which the troops were subjected during the Crimean winter. ***In editing Russell's Journal, Mr Bentley has omitted certain material which does not bear directly on the conduct of the war and, where necessary, has inserted brief linking passages. The result is a day-to-day, eyewitness account of the campaign from the first sailing of the expedition to the final surrender of Sebastopol and the armistice. Russell witnessed the battles of Alma, Inkerman, Balaklava and the Tchernaya; he saw the charge of the Light Brigade and the carnage at the Malakoff and the Redan. His descriptions are graphic, and despite the intervening years the idiom still seems extraordinarily modern.' ***(Quote from inside of dustwrapper blurb). ***First impression of the true first edition, of interest to military historians researching The Crimean War.
