Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Near Fine. First Edition; First Printing. TEN PAGES SHOW INK MARKINGS. Else, Very Near Fine in Near Fine DJ: The Book shows, beside the markings, only a couple of tiny flecks of foxing to the top edge of the text block and a circled 'M' and a numeral 3 at the rear pastedown endpaper; the binding is square and secure; the text is clean. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome, nearly-new copy, structurally sound and tightly bound; showing very minor, unobtrusive imperfections - and the underlinings in ink. Bright and clean. Clearly flawed, but otherwise close to 'As New'. The DJ shows only a hint of wear to the extremities; unclipped. Very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (9.25 x 6.25 x 1 inches) . Translated, prepared and edited by H. S. Harris and Walter Cerf. Language: English. Weight: 20.5 ounces. First Edition Thus (1977) , First printing unstated and unindicated. No subsequent printings listed. Hardcover with DJ. In this essay, Hegel attempted to show how Fichte's Science of Knowledge was an advance from the position of Kant in the Critique of Pure Reason, and how Schelling (and incidentally Hegel himself) had made a further advance from the position of Fichte.; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; xxxviii, 236 pages.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. First edition of Hegel's first book, the so-called Differenzschrift, an important milestone in the development of German idealism post-Kant. For an account of how Hegel's own annotated copy found its way from a Berlin bookshop to a school library in Tokyo where it was discovered in 2014, see Hegel-Studien Vol. 49, pp. 157-70. 'In The Difference between Fichte's and Schelling's System of Philosophy, Hegel set out that difference in terms of a contrast between reflective and speculative philosophy. Dichotomy, rupture [Entzweiung], he argued, gives rise to the need for philosophy, a rupturing which reflective philosophy both seeks to resolve and exasperates. The understanding strives to enlarge itself to the absolute, but, in its finitude, it only reproduces itself endlessly, positing oppositions within itself and its products, and so mocks itself. The being of nature, in particular, is either disolved into abstractions or remains but a deadly darkness within the intellect. Although Fichte was Hegel's prime target here, much of contemporary philosophy was included in his critique. Hegel argued that the identity philosophy of Schelling, however, in which reason raises itself to speculation and provides a positive account of being, overcomes such finitudes and ruptures. The Kritische Journal der Philosophie that Schelling and Hegel launched from Jena in 1802, critical of the limitations of proliferating philosophical systems, sought to establish an objective philosophical criticism based upon such a speculative use of reason' (Joan Steigerwald, Studies in Romanticism, Vol. 41, No. 4., 2002, p. 545). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 8vo, xii, [13]-184 pp., 20th-century marbled boards with red spine label lettered in gilt, ownership inscription on front free endpaper, no stamps and no other inscriptions, uniform light age toning and a very few isolated spots, an excellent copy with wide margins, uncut.
