Cette acquisition permit de lever le doute sur l'authenticité de cette célèbre lettre. L'illustration se compose de trois portraits de Fénelon, Louis XIV et Madame de Maintenon, et d'un facsimilé du manuscrit. Exemplaire imprimé sur papier de paille, justifié d'une note manuscrite d'un Renouard : "ce volume est entièrement imprimé sur du papier de paille. R.". Le catalogue de la bibliothèque d'Antoine-Augustin Renouard (Potier, 1854) indique que pour cet ouvrage "peu d'exemplaires ont été tirés, tant sur ce papier [vélin] qu'en une autre sorte aussi papier vélin blanc, quoique fait de paille." Les portraits ont quant à eux été tirés sur un papier vergé (de paille ?) et le facsimilé de la lettre sur le même papier que le texte, sur papier vélin de paille. On ne retrouve que peu d'exemples d'autres d'ouvrages imprimés sur papier de paille dans le catalogue de la bibliothèque de Renouard.
