Paperback. Etat : Very Good. A megalomaniac Boer frontiersman wreaks hideous vengeance on a Hottentot tribe for undermining the 'natural' order of his universe with their anarchic rival order, mocking him and subjecting him to the humiliations of his own all too palpable flesh. A specialist in psychological warfare is driven to breakdown and madness by the stresses of a project of macabre ingenuity to win the war in Vietnam. Both the 18th-century Jacobus Coetzee and the 20th-century Eugene Dawn are in the business of pushing back the frontiers of knowledge and are dealers in death who denounce their own humanity and spurn their feelings of guilt. In these two narratives, Coetzee has crystallized in their absurdity and horror the extremes of scientific evangelism and heroic exploration. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Early printing of the Nobel Prize-winning author's first book. Octavo, original wrappers. Boldly signed by J.M. Coetzee on the title page. In fine condition. Dusklands is a pair of novellas in the tradition of Conrad's Heart of Darkness. The first novella "Dusklands" probes the links between the powerful and the powerless. The second novella "Vietnam Project" is narrated by a researcher investigating the effectiveness of United States propaganda and psychological warfare in Vietnam. The question of power is also explored in "The Narrative of Jacobus Coetzee," the story of an eighteenth-century Boer frontiersman who vows revenge on the Hottentot natives because they have failed to treat him with the respect that he thinks a white man deserves.

Original Brown Hardback. Etat : Very Good Plus. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. First UK Edition. 1982. First UK edition, first impression. [ix], 125pp. John Maxwell Coetzee (born 1940) is a famous South African-born novelist, essayist, linguist, translator and recipient of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Literature. 'Dusklands' was his first work of fiction, originally published in South Africa in 1974. It consists of two mirror narratives in which he explores some of the themes he was later to develop in his novels 'In the Heart of the Country' and 'Waiting for the Barbarians'. The book is bound in the original brown paper covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with slight bumping to the top of the spine and a very small dent on the top edge of the front board. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper is also very good with light shelf wear and bumping to the top of the spine and top front corner. There is rubbing to the tips of the other corners and a crease across part of the top front edge. There is some rubbing down the front fore edge and the spine is slightly faded.
