(pp.205-240). "Preface. The series of tales contained in this volume, as well as those entitled 'The Confessions of an Attorney,' have been attributed to Samuel Warren, esq., author of the 'Diary of a Physician,' 'Ten Thousand-a-year,' &c. To say nothing of the name given on the title page, which is evidently a nomme de plume, it must be confessed that the internal evidence of their having been written by Mr. Warren, is strong, and the fact that these tales, like those above named, first appeared in an Edinburgh Magazine, corroborates the supposition. One thing, however is certain, the author of these 'Experiences' wields no common pen. It is believed that in this form these tales will continue to enjoy the popularity--a popularity almost unprecedented, which has been awarded them, as they have appeared at intervals in the Edinburgh Journal." (Preface, p. [iii]).
