First edition. Royal octavo. pp xxiv, 588. Frontispiece and numerous woodcuts in the text; two maps (one folding). Having taken part in the California Gold Rush of 1849, the author sailed in 1854 to Honduras as an agent of the Honduras Mining and Trading Company. This book is the record of a year's journeying through a country which at that time was largely unknown to outsiders. Wells also spent some time in Nicaragua investigating prospects for mining. He later acted as Consul to Honduras for many years. It is possible the endpapers have been renewed, but if so it was done some time ago. Folding map a bit nicked at one edge. Tail of spine and bottom corners of covers slightly scuffed. Very good.
