130pp, [2]. With an engraved title page. Original publisher's blind-ruled brown cloth, lettered in gilt. Extremities rubbed and marked. Decorated endpapers, later armorial bookplate (designed by Ralph Fletcher Seymour) of Owen Franklin Aldis to FEP, presentation plate of Yale University Library (dated 1911) to REP, foxed. A mid nineteenth-century edition of American poet, and member of the Knickerbocker Group, Fitz-Greene Halleck's (1790-1867) longest poem. First published anonymously in 1819, Fanny, modelled on Byron's Beppo and Don Juan, proved so popular that the initial 50 cent edition was soon commanding sums of up to $10. Two years later, its continuing popularity motivated Halleck to append an additional 50 stanzas. Size: 12mo.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good -. 52 p.; 14 cm. Brown wrapper with wrapper title in black. American poet Fitz-Greene Halleck first published "Fanny," his satirical look at social mobility and New York society, in 1819. Its popularity led him to publish a version with 50 additional sections in 1821. This edition is of the longer version, running through section CLXXI. "T. Tickler & Co." was presumably a false imprint, as it produced no other works. A copy of this edition was presented to the author by his friend, the London bookseller Robert Triphook; it seems likely that Triphook himself published it as T. Tickler & Co. [see Wilson, Life and Letters of Fitz-Greene Halleck (1869), 405.] Satire aside, the poem provides a fascinating glimpse of New York City in the 1810s. A very scarce edition of this American poem. In Very Good- Condition: some loss of wrapper along spine; front wrapper has chip out of fore-edge and minor loss at corners; wrapper slightly soiled; light foxing throughout; otherwise clean and tight.
