Introduction THE NAVAHO TELL OF FOUR WORLDS through which their primordial ancestors progressed. These worlds are hemispheres, stacked one on another, each supported by pillars of precious stone, and each lit with color?red, blue, yellow, black, and white?rather than light. As the ancestors of the Navaho moved up from world to world, driven by sorcery and witchcraft, they developed social and cultural institutions. When they finally emerged into the fifth, or present, world, First Man and First Woman created the sun and the moon, and light came to predominate. It is tliis world which is generally recognized as the best. Today the Navaho inhabit the largest Indian reservation in the United States: some twenty-four thousand square miles in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah of what is often euphemistically called semiarid land and which is roughly divided into an eastern and western section.0 Although Navaho mythology and legend are filled with stories of the early inhabitants of this fifth world, historically little is known of the origin of the People, as the Navaho call themselves. Linguistic evidence suggests a northern origin, for they, like their cousins the Apache, speak a tongue which is closely related to the Athabaskan languages spoken by certain Indian tribes in the interior of northwestern Canada. No date can be set with any certainty for the 'The inhabitants of the eastern or older reservation tend to be more acculturated than those of the western reservation, where the events recorded in this book took place. 242 pages.
