Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Although no date appears anywhere on the book to determine precise date of printing a review of the titles on the rear jacket panel ( all Sampson and Low adventure stories for boys and girls ) suggests a printing in the mid thirties. A very good copy of the book with some wear to the edges Extremely uncommon dust jacket with some short edge tears and chipping and a thumbnail sized chip to the upper edge of the rear panel. The front panel illustration depicts an aboriginal chieftain apparently being chased while he runs along carrying a base fiddle. Hardcover. Etat : Good. 1st Edition. 1875 Jules Verne The Floating Island French Lit Adventure Ville Flottante Hetzel "A French adventure novel of the sailing of the biggest ship that has ever sailed!" Jules Verne's adventure novels are some of the most popular and famous works of literature of all time. "A Floating City," while not one of Verne's most famous books, saw significant success shortly after it was first published. In fact, it was as popular as "Around the World" when they were first published. Verne uses his adventure novel motif but includes more elements of romance than in previous novels. This famous printing includes the "aux deux elephants" on the cover. New York: W.L. Allison Company, n.d. [1897]. Original tan cloth pictorially decorated in brown and white. First American Edition of this remarkable tale of "an enormous ship built by the Yanks, that has a great city on it, and is navigated about the world, playing ducks and drakes with geography and the balance of political power in the South Seas, until finally the savages of the New Hebrides and the forces of Nature rise up and annihilate it" [from a contemporary review cited in T&M]. L'ÎLE À HÉLICE ("Propeller Island") was first published in the original French in 1895; later that year Sampson Low of London announced it would soon be publishing it in English as SCREW ISLAND, but changed its title to THE FLOATING ISLAND when published in October of that year. Curiously, it would not be published in America for two more years, when Allison issued it, as here -- a volume in their "Fireside Series" (though not so identified). Apparently no other American editions came out until 1903. The binding includes a "THE" not on the title page; included are 79 black-and-white plates (as in the UK edition), placed in the volume rather haphazardly by the binder. This is a remarkably fine copy, with essentially no binding wear or soil at all -- amazing for this light-colored cloth. This is a very scarce Verne edition -- as are just about all of Verne's American titles which constitute a publisher's only first American edition. It is many times scarcer than the UK edition: this is only the second copy we have seen in our 40 years in business, and the first since 2005. Taves & Michaluk V043.

First English edition, first printing. Publisher's green cloth over bevelled boards, illustrated in black, white and gilt. All edges gilt. Illustrated title page and 79 full page steel engravings. Tissue guard to the frontispiece. An excellent, better than very good copy, the binding firm with a little rubbing and bumping to the spine tips and corners. The contents with two previous owner's names (dated 1912 and August 1966) to the front endpaper, the latter owner's small bookplate to the upper left corner of the front pastedown, are otherwise clean throughout. The inner front hinge is slightly tender and cracked but holding. A very attractive example of the first edition in English, translated by W. J. Gordon and published in October 1896, preceding the first American edition by just over a year. This is the "deluxe" issue binding with bevelled boards and extra gilt blocking, there was also a "standard" issue on lighter boards with only the titles in gilt. (Bleiler). Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.
