The authors analyzed foraminifera (single-celled organisms with shells) collected from drill cores at the West Flower Garden Bank in the Gulf of Mexico. Because different foraminifera species inhabit specific water depths and environments, changes in the fossil assemblages found in sediment layers indicate past environmental shifts. The study focuses on the West Flower Garden Bank, part of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, which features the northernmost coral reefs in the Gulf of Mexico. The research intended to reconstruct past changes in sea level and environmental conditions at the site. These types of studies are crucial for understanding Earth's climate history.
