Paperback. First Edition Thus [1963], So Stated. First Edition Thus [1963], So Stated. Very Good+ in Wraps: shows only the most minute indications of use: a price has been neatly blocked out at the upper front panel; faint soiling to the white background field of the backstrip and rear panel; one of the signature's pages show the expected very light tanning, due to aging but the rest of the text pages are remarkably bright for a sixty-year-old paperback; the binding is square and secure; the text is clean. Free of creases to the panels. Free of creases to the backstrip. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of any underlining, hi-lighting or marginalia or marks in the text. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing mild wear and minor cosmetic imperfections. Bright and clean. .Close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 12mo. (7.15 x 4.3 x 0.75 inches). xviii, 429 pages. Illustrated with drawings by Joseph Lada. Translated by Paul Selver. Language: English. Foreward by Leslie A. Fieldler. Weight: 9.7 ounces. CT176. Mass Market Paperback. Jaroslav Haek (1883 1923) was a Czech writer, humorist, satirist, journalist, bohemian and anarchist. He is best known for this novel, an unfinished collection of farcical incidents about a soldier in World War I and a satire on the ineptitude of authority figures. The novel has been translated into about 60 languages, making it the most translated novel in Czech literature. Haek's black satire, the inspiration for such works as Joseph Heller's Catch-22 Good-natured and garrulous, vejk becomes the Austro-Hungarian army's most loyal Czech soldier when he is called up on the outbreak of the First World War - although his bumbling attempts to get to the front serve only to prevent him from reaching it. Playing cards, getting drunk and becoming a general nuisance, the resourceful vejk uses all his natural cunning and genial subterfuge to deal with the doctors, police, clergy and officers who chivvy him towards battle. The story of a 'little man' caught in a vast bureaucratic machine, The Good Soldier vejk combines dazzling wordplay and piercing satire to create a hilariously subversive depiction of the futility of war.
