Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Illustrated Edition. The Shell guides were informative, well-illustrated books and this volume is no exception. This is one of the later guides, originally published by Michael Joseph Ltd, and gives a comprehensive account of the history of London s buildings from the well-known to the more obscure. 496 pages. Green cloth with gold lettering. Printed on semi-gloss paper and profusely illustrated. But for a very small scuff mark on the front cover and slight rubbing at the edges and corners the book is in excellent condition. The pictorial dust wrapper is lightly worn at the corners and has a tiny split at the head of the spine. A heavy book so overseas shipping may be expensive.

Hardcover. Etat : Fine. ## The History of London: A Shell Guide by W D Dalzell 1981## ~#~ THIS BOOK: Classified FINE: This is a 1981 Edition. The jacket is full gloss and laminated. The book is in a new condition. A very interesting and informative book about London from Roman times. ## ## London is the subject of many books, but few of these do more than provide a brief introduction and guide for the tourist, and none delves as deeply into London's historical and social background as W.R. Dalzell's Shell Guide to the History of London. In London, it is possible to stand by a Roman wall and be within easy walking distance of an eleventh-century monastic church, a Tudor gatehouse from which a queen watched martyrs being burned at the stake. Elizabethan almshouses still in use, a golden boy was marking the limits of the Great Fire of 1666. Churches and a cathedral built by Sir Christopher Wren, a Georgian Hospital containing mural paintings by Hogarth and a Victorian meat market, and a building from which Marconi sent his first successful messages by radio. London is a city of rich historical complexity. ## ## Ronald Dalzell's fascination with his subject is communicated vividly to his reader as he progresses from London's Roman origins through the centuries to the city as it is today. He is concerned not with what has been destroyed by the Great Fire or by the bombs of the Second World War, but rather with what can still be seen now and will enhance the visitor's knowledge of the genesis and the development of the city of London. As an art historian he is particularly well equipped to describe the various styles of building and to comment on interiors, but he also introduces the characters which have peopled the annals of London's history ? kings and queens, artists and architects, benefactors, property developers and diarists, for example ? and who have influenced its evolution.## ##Magnificently illustrated and containing maps and appendices giving practical information, The Shell Guide to the History of London will add a new dimension to the visitor's experience of the city and give enormous pleasure to those who live and work there already.## #### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note.
