Description de l'article : Hardcover. Etat : Fine. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION of the greatest Haggadah of the 20th century, finely printed in color on vellum, one of only 250 numbered signed copies. The entire edition of the celebrated Szyk Haggadah, was printed on vellum and signed by both Szyk and Roth. The trade edition did not appear until 1956. Szyk (1894-1951), a Polish Jew who left Europe for America in 1940, is the foremost modern artist to work in the style of medieval illuminated manuscripts. His works have been exhibited at libraries and museums throughout the world, and his Haggadah is a centerpiece of many leading institutional collections of the history of the book. Szyk created the work s watercolor and gouache illuminations between 1934 and 1936 while living in Poland. The Beaconsfield Press was established in London for the purpose of publishing the lavish and costly book, printed entirely on vellum and finely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. The 250 copies printed were priced at $500. The Szyk Haggadah, certainly the most beautiful Haggadah ever printed, is one of the greatest illustrated books of the twentieth century. Large 4to. Printed on vellum. 48 pages printed in color. Original blue morocco gilt by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, with the original half blue morocco case, also by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. A fine copy. Signed by Author(s). N° de réf. du vendeur ABE-1564518414859

Description de l'article : Number 75 of 125 copies signed by Szyk and Roth; large 4to., (28.8 x 25 cm), text in Hebrew and English, printed on vellum on one side only, in variously coloured inks; 14 full-page and numerous smaller colour halftone reproductions of Szyk's drawings including decorative initials, vignettes and border decorations; original blue levant crushed morocco gilt by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, covers elaborately tooled with image of a Hebrew prophet after Szyk, spine gilt in seven compartments, turn-ins gilt, silk doublures printed with a monochromatic illustration of Moses supporting the Ten Commandments; original three-quarter morocco solander box, slightly faded and with some minor wear to case). 'The book is a masterpiece, one that should increase the happiness of every one of its possessors, who will find new interest and new delight every time he opens its pages' (The Jewish Chronicle). Arthur Szyk, a Polish Jew, produced works characterised by social and political comment, and in their formal aspect by the rejection of modernism and drawing on the traditions of medieval and renaissance painting, especially illuminated manuscripts from those periods. Unlike most caricaturists, Szyk always showed great attention to the colour effects and details in his works. Szyk's drawings and paintings became even more politically engaged when Hitler took power in Germany in 1933. Szyk started drawing Führer's caricatures as early as 1933; probably, the first work of the artist directed against the leader of the Third Reich was a drawing of Hitler, made in pencil, in which he was shown as a new pharaoh. These drawings anticipated the present great series of Szyk's arts Haggadah, his magnum opus. Szyk illustrated it in 48 drawings in the years 1932-1938, and the development of the political situation in Germany at that time made him introduce some contemporary elements to it. These referred to, in particular, the parable of the four sons, in which the 'wicked son' was portrayed as a man wearing German clothes, with a Hitler-like moustache. The expression of the series was even stronger in its original version: the drawings showed snakes with swastikas, there were also heads of Hermann Göring and Joseph Goebbels. In 1937, Arthur Szyk went to London to supervise the publication of The Haggadah. However, the artist had to agree to many compromises during the work which lasted three years, including painting over all of the swastikas. It is not clear whether he did it as a result of the pressure by his publisher or the British politicians, who pursued the policy of appeasement in relation to Germany. Finally, The Haggadah was published in London in late 1940 (and not 1939, which is the date of Szyk's opening words; see Roth); the artist dedicated it to King George VI. The work was widely acclaimed by critics; according to The Times, it was 'worthy to be placed among the most beautiful of books that the hand of man has ever produced'. N° de réf. du vendeur 100238

Original three-quarter morocco box lined in velvet. It was the star in The Library of Congress Exhibit of World War II Era Prints and Drawings by Arthur Szyk ."The Library of Congress celebrates the recent acquisition of several important original works by Polish American artist and illustrator Arthur Szyk. The exhibition "Arthur Szyk: Artist for Freedom," curated by Harry Katz, opened on December 9, and closed on May 6, 2000. Arthur Szyk (pronounced "Shick") (1894-1951), cartoonist, illuminator, and miniaturist, achieved international prominence during World War II when he produced hundreds of anti-Axis illustrations and cartoons in aid of the Allied war effort. Throughout his career he created art in the service of human rights and civil liberties, in his native Poland, in Paris where he was trained during the 1920s, and in America, the country he adopted in 1940, saying, "At last, I have found the home I have always searched for. Here I can speak of what my soul feels. There is no other place on earth that gives one the freedom, liberty and justice that America does."Szyk was born in Lodz, Poland, acquiring his early art training in Paris and Krakow. Between 1919 and 1920, during Poland's war against the Soviet Bolsheviks, he served as artistic director of the Department of Propaganda for the Polish army regiment quartered in Lodz. In 1921, he moved to Paris, where he lived and worked for 10 years. In 1934 Szyk traveled to the United States for exhibitions of his work, including the Library of Congress, where a series of 38 miniatures commemorating George Washington and the Revolutionary period were shown. He embraced the patriotic spirit of his adopted country, particularly evident in the symbolism in The United States of America, including an African American and Native American who struggled for freedom and power, as well as popular imagery familiar to many Americans: Hoover Dam, the Manhattan skyline, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Pony Express. He created memorable anti-Nazi cartoons and illustrated numerous books. This richly rendered, magnificently printed Haggadah is printed entirely on vellum. The illustrations, full-page and half-page are in color and halftone reproductions of compositions by Szyk, including numerous decorative initials, text ornaments and many small vignettes. Pictorial doublures on silk. Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe: Royal blue levant morocco, gilt-tooled pictorial inlay. Housed in original matching solander case. Velvet interior. Printed in black and sepia. Signed by the artist and Editor. Yudlov 3861; Yaari 2285. See also J. P. Ansell, Arthur Szyk: Artist, Jew, Pole (2004), pages 96 - 100. Roth (1899-1970) , editor in chief of the Encyclopaedia Judaica, was born in London and went to Merton College, Oxford, where he showed an interest in Jewish history and liturgy as early as his undergraduate years. He was a reader in Jewish studies at Oxford for two and a half decades, until 1964, when he moved to Jerusalem, as a visiting professor at Bar-Ilan University. After a heart attack and being falsely accused of unorthodoxy, he left Bar-Ilan, and spent the rest of his life editing the Encyclopaedia Judaica and teaching at Queens College and Stern College in New York. Roth wrote and published profusely, with O. K. Rabinowitz's 1966 bibliography listing 572 items, though the actual number is over 600, including translations and editing of Haggadot. (Lipman, EJ). Signed by Szyk and Roth. N° de réf. du vendeur 005026

Description de l'article : Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Limited Premier Edition. 1/85. 95pp. [1]. Housed in a red cloth clamshell box, with blue leather and gilt lettering on the front cover. Haggadah bound in gorgeous blue and red leather with gilt lettering and ruling on the spine. Also housed in the clamshell box is a second volume, containing a page by page analysis of the Haggadah (in blue cloth), a smaller red cloth portfolio with 12 loose plates of prints from the haggadah, a cd-rom discussing the production of this edition, and a finely printed introductory prospectus on the Haggadah. The work was originally conceived during the rise of Nazi Germany, with images in the form of illuminated miniature paintings, which draw conceptual parallels between the Israelites struggle to overcome Egyptian oppression in the Passover story, and the persecution and horrors faced by Jews at the hands of the Third Reich during that period. This stunning reproduction edition of Szyk's legendary masterpiece, originally published in the 1930s, is itself a masterpiece of production and artistry. This premier edition was printed in a limited edition of 85 copies, numbered and hand-signed by publisher Irvin Unger, of which this copy is #38. Bound in a French fold style on double-leaves of beautifully produced Hahnemuhle paper. Beautiful decorative endpapers speckled in gilt. Created by an unparalleled international team of craftsmen, scholars and printers. The list price on the Historicana website is $18,000. Description de l'article : French Fold Binding. Etat : Near Fine. Szyk, Arthur (illustrateur). 4to. This is the first trade edition of Arthur Szyk's masterpiece, see Ungar p 93. Complete with 112 unnumbered pages; color illustrations throughout. Blue velvet cover with gilt decoration and lettering. Protective clamshell box with velvet-lining in black half-leather over blue cloth with gilt decoraton and lettering that match the book. Sound binding with intact hinges. Clean pages with bright, crisp color. One bifollium bound in upside down. Almost no wear to cover. Clamshell box is nice shape with some minor edge wear. Originally printed on vellum in 1939 in an edition limited to only 250 copies, Szyk's masterpiece was hailed by the Times [London] Literary Supplement as "one of the most beautiful works ever produced by human hands" Ungar p 15. Prepared in the style of a medieval manuscript, the illustrations and additional commentary compelled a direct comparison between between the time of Pharoah and the then contemporary time of Hitler. In doing so and "in constrst to many other haggadot, Szyk's interpretation sounds a militant tone and is filled with Zionist symbolism. . . . Throughout the volume, he added ancient warriors and heroic biblical figures that are not mentioned in the Seder text," see Lukert p 28. Far nicer than any of the later reprints except for the recent luxury editions that sell new for $8,800 (deluxe edition) or $18,000 (premier edition). N° de réf. du vendeur 008462

Blue faux velvet binding in gold-lined three-quarter black cloth over blue cloth clamshell box with blue faux velvet lining. Beveled edges. Front and rear of book as well as front of clamshell box decorated with gold-stamped Kiddush Goblet motif, gold-embossed decoration on spine of box. Inside of front and back board illustrated with b/w reproduction of a drawing by Szyk. Color frontispiece. English & Hebrew title-pages. "It has been left to a contemporary, Arthur Szyk, to rediscover the secret and to revive the art - not in terms of Jewish books alone, for his reputation is co-extensive with the book-loving world. To call him the greatest illuminator since the sixteenth-century is no flattery. It is the simple truth which becomes manifest to any person who studies his work with the care it deserves. Alone perhaps among modern artists (for he is an artist above all) Szyk considers his art in the terms of books, and books in the terms of his art. He does not illuminate a page, as many before him have attempted to do, considering it to be a unit in itself. He thinks of each page in its relation to the text and to the volume, integrating calligraphy, illumination, illustration and narrative into one harmonious whole. It is in this, even more than in the exquisite perfection of his work, that he inherits the spirit of his medieval precursors.Szyk sees the Haggadah as a unity. He worked upon it between 1932 and 1938, when the greatest perhaps of all the tragedies in its millennial history overwhelmed the Jewish people. It was natural therefore for him to be absorbed in that wonderful passage, the keynote of the whole ritual: It is this Devine pledge that hath stood by our fathers and by us also. Not only one man hath risen against us to destroy us, but in every generation have men risen against us to destroy us. But the Holy One (Blessed be He!) delivereth us always from their hand." Profusely illustrated with reproductions of exquisite illuminations and drawings by Szyk in brilliant rich colors. Text in English and Hebrew. Clamshell box in very good, binding and interior in near fine condition. N° de réf. du vendeur 48198

Description de l'article : Szyk, Arthur. Forty-eight full-page illustrations, and decorations, printed in red, black, purple, sanguine, blue, and green inks on fifty-six double-folded leaves. Text in English, and in Hebrew within some illustrations on facing pages. 1 vols. 4to. A well appointed redaction of the 1939 edition. Executed by Arthur Szyk, edited by Cecil Roth, and originally published in a deluxe limited edition of 250 copies. The Szyk Haggadah is a Passover Haggadah, executed contemporary to its time (Poland between 1934 and 1936), which drew uncomfortable parallels between the policies of Nazi Germany and the those of the Pharoah of the biblical "Book of Exodus." Szyk partially removed for publication the more obvious references, e.g., swastikas on the Egyptians armbands, but left in a Hitler mustache in "The Four Sons" illumination. Fine, housed in blue and black cloth clamshell case, lined in blue velvet, stamped in gilt to reflect the edition, lightly rubbed, minimal wear at foretips Forty-eight full-page illustrations, and decorations, printed in red, black, purple, sanguine, blue, and green inks on fifty-six double-folded leaves. Text in English, and in Hebrew within some illustrations on facing pages. 1 vols. 4to. N° de réf. du vendeur 310943
