Etat : Wie neu. Gr. 8°. XIX, 770 Seiten mit zahlreichen Tabellen und einigen Schaubildern im Text. Originalleinen mit Umschlag (= Handbooks of Gerontology). Umschlag berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - The Handbook is organized into three parts. Part I deals with the basis and theory of the societal aspects of aging, beginning with an introductory chapter which undertakes to trace the origins of social gerontology and to provide a framework for the book as a whole. This is followed by a chapter which sets forth the principal, relevant demographic changes of the past half-century and projects some of them into the future. A benchmark chapter describing approaches to aging in more or less static preindustrial societies sets the stage for two more which seek to identify the changes characteristic of the transition from low-energy to high-energy societies and to suggest how the transition may affect and may be affected by increasing numbers of older persons. Part II, entitled "The Impact of Aging on Individual Activities and Social Roles," deals with the effects of biological and psychological aging, of changes in health and income status, and of technological and sociocultural influences on the position, roles, and behavior of middle-aged and older people. Considerable attention is given to the basically important changing values and functions of work and leisure, with reference to social status and to personal and social adjustment. Part III, "Aging and the Reorganization of Society," serves a number of purposes. It suggests how technological and social change is affecting nine major societal or organizational complexes with reference to aging, suggests numerous questions for study with reference to how these changing institutions may be affecting the environment of older people, and identifies the ways in which institutions and organizations may be modifying their structures and activities in response to population aging and to the efforts of older people to meet their changing needs.
