There are sporadic stains on the pages. Minor contemporary numeric notations on the first page of No. 271. The pages are very occasionally trimmed close, obscuring a little of the text. Roughly 20 or so pages have long closed tears that measure up to 10 inches long. There are losses from the edges of pp. 495, 525-527, 823, and 829, obscuring some of the text and illustration. The last page is tattered. Extra charges apply on this item due to weight. Illustrated with a number of maps and double-page illustrations. With advertisements for such items and services as Elliot's Pocket Revolver, Military Books, "Moustaches and Whiskers in 42 days," Laurie's Chinese Life Pills (an anecdote to the effects of eating opium), The Soldiers' Bullet Proof Vest, Every Man his own Printer, French Yoke Shirts, Head-Quarters for Cheap Jewelry, and The "Craig Microscope" (so simple a child may use it). This volume also includes an early serialization of "No Name" by Wilkie Collins, a tale of illegitimacy. Harper's Weekly was a very popular journal in America throughout the period of the Civil War. The Abolition of Slavery- A Proclamation (The Emancipation Proclamation) is printed here in issue Number 301 (October 4, 1862). Abraham Lincoln had just issued it on September 22.
