First and only edition of this fascinating account of the transmutations of a single engraved plate. The image involved is an equestrian portrait, in which the artist changed the face according to his immediate needs. A unique episode in the history of printmaking. Fully illustrated. One of 250 copies printed on laid paper for the members of the Print Collector's Club. 4to, publisher's cloth-backed boards. A little wear to binding and some light foxing on the title-page, but overall a very good, uncut copy.
