Quarter-Cloth. Etat : Fine-. First Edition of the most sought after and rarest of L'Illustration's great albums, a landmark work describing in exhaustive detail photography's early development. Text in French. Royal 8vo (375 x 280mm): [8],451,[5]pp, profusely illustrated with hundreds of monochrome and color plates (some with die-cut and decorative mounts and borders), using a variety of reproduction techniques and paper stocks, and an original full-page calotype (still life by Sougez, p. 189). Publisher's maroon cloth spine titled in silver, marbled paper-covered boards, and decorative endpapers, with original lorgnon bicolore (3-D glasses) housed in front past-down pocket for viewing in relief the anaglyphs on pp. 285-88. Corners lightly rubbed, few trivial nicks to boards, but an excellent example, securely bound and virtually pristine throughout. Frizot, p. 10. Successor to Beaumont Newhall's The History of Photography (1937), demonstrating "the irrevocable link between technique and the meaning of images. The effect was to recognize that photography had achieved an immediate maturity, contemporary with its invention." (Frizot) With such chapters as: the antecedents of photography, the age of daguerreotype and calotype, the vogue of artistic photography, the animated image, and the conquest of color. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Hardcover. Etat : vg. First edition. Folio. [4], III, [1], 451, [5]pp. Original olive leatherette with yellow lettering on spine. Decorative endpapers. In pocket on inside of front cover is a "lorgnon bicolore" (3-D glasses) for viewing several three-dimensional images within. First edition of this definitive French history, describing in extraordinary visual detail photography's earliest developments through to its revolutionary impact on space exploration, with a rich history of printing methods and innovators such as Niépce and Muybridge, and a survey of artistic, scientific and journalistic highlights, featuring hundreds of black-and-white and color illustrations, including an original 1932 8-1/2 by 12 inch photograph, a full-page framed image of a calotype negative and its positive print. One of the earliest and most comprehensive 20th-century studies of photography, this beautifully illustrated 'Histoire de la Photographie' succeeded Beaumont Newhall's 1937 survey, which had focused only on "photographic categories regarded as artistic. It fell to Raymond Lécuyer to attempt, in 1945, to show the irrevocable link between technique and the meaning of images. The effect was to recognize that photography had achieved an immediate maturity, contemporary with its invention" (Frizot, 10). This landmark work is arranged both chronologically and thematically, providing a sumptuous and informative record that provides conclusive evidence of the medium's key impact in establishing "the visual foundation of modern society" (Frizot, 13). Minor and sporadic soiling on binding. Text in French. Binding in overall good+ to very good, interior in very good condition.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. Paris: Baschet et Cie, 1945. (15 1/8 x 11 5/8 in., 38.3 x 29 cm). 452 pp. Folio. Original half pebbled maroon cloth backed marbled paper wrapped boards, spine lettered in gold (very good, firmly bound, moderate wear especially at edges, tear at upper joint (3.5 cm), without restoration. Internally very near fine save for last approximately 30 pages that are lightly dampwrinkled at bottom). One of the earlier 20th-Century studies of photography. Profusely illustrated employing a variety of reproduction methods and paper stocks and including pasted on plates, tipped on plates, die cut and/or decorated mounts and borders. At least one half tone plate has been varnished, trimmed and mounted to convincingly resemble an original ferrotyped gelatin silver print (a still life by Sougez, p. 189). Apparently no effort or expense was spared in producing this, the only, edition. A most well preserved copy indeed, without restoration, and scarce thus. Inquiries welcomed.
