[Full collation available.] With all three half-titles and 159 engraved plates, 147 of which are in color (some engraved with hand-color, others stipple-engraved à la poupée, hand-finished in color). Collated perfect against the binder's instructions on the verso of the final leaf of vol. I. Bound in contemporary polished blue calf. On the boards, a wide gilt scrollwork border surrounding a blind leaf-roll border. On the spine, four raised bands with a geometric gilt roll. Excellent margins, with several preserved deckles at the fore. With an advertisement for the work laid in to vol. I. Le Jardin Fruitier is a collaboration of two towering botanical figures of the July Monarchy: Louis Claude Noisette (1772-1849) and Pancrace Bessa (1772-1846). The first edition of 1821 surveyed the pomological richness of France, and was followed by Noisette's vast Manuel complet du jardinier (1824-1827). In his preparation of the Manuel Noisette gathered a great deal of new material, and as such our second edition is enlarged as well as substantially revised. Here we can see the self-mythologization of France as a nation of unlimited culinary bounty as well as superb connoisseurship. Indeed, one of the great monuments of French culinary supremacy, Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin's Physiologie du goût (1825), had appeared between the editions. Bessa, who with his close colleague Redouté as well as Prévost and Turpin de Crissé was one of the great botanical illustrators of this period, demonstrates his command (superior, in the estimation of some, to Redouté's) of the color-printing process of stipple-engraving à la poupée. In this process, the plates were inked with several colors applied with small cotton pads (shaped like a doll or poupée) for each impression. The process is intensively laborious and proved too expensive to continue for long into the XIXc. It is interesting to see a mix of processes, presumably for the sake of economy (the loose advertisement makes a point of emphasizing the lower price of the work). Nissen, BBI 1451; Pritzel 6733.
