Leder.

Full Calf Leather. Etat : Poor. First Edition. All 41 copper engraved plates of Apes & Monkeys are present. Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (September 7, 1707 -- April 16, 1788) was a French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist and author. Buffon's views influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin. Darwin himself, in his foreword to the 6th edition of the Origin of Species, credited Aristotle with foreshadowing the concept of natural selection, and stated that "the first author who in modern times has treated it in a scientific spirit was Buffon". Buffon is best remembered for his great work Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière (1749-1788: in 36 volumes, 8 additional volumes published after his death by Lacépède). It included everything known about the natural world up until that date. In it Buffon considered the similarities between humans and apes, and the possibility of a common ancestry. Buffon debated James Burnett, Lord Monboddo on the question of ancestry of the primates to man, Monboddo insisting on the closeness of relationship of man and apes. Buffon's work is considered to have greatly influenced modern ecology. His Histoire was translated into many different languages, making him the most widely read scientific author of the day. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Hardcover.

Paris, l'Imprimerie Royale, 1749-1767. 15 Parts in 15. 4to (25.3 x 19.3 cm). Title pages with allegorical engraved vignettes, numerous engraved head and tail pieces. 6496 pp.; 587 engraved plates, one large, folded chart, and two folded maps. Uniform contemporary full tree calf. Spines with five raised bands, rich gilt compartments with floral vignettes, two morocco labels with gilt titles. Marbled endpapers. Edges red. = The complete first 15 volumes, first 4to edition ("PMM edition") of this large and important series on natural history by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788). Together they form a coherent segment of the whole work, namely the origin of the world, the history of life, the natural history of Man, and that of the other terrestrial mammals, including domestic animals, apes and monkeys, cats, dogs, deer, pachyderms, rodents, etc., etc. Other parts, not included here, deal with birds, fish, whales, amphibians and reptiles, and with the minerals. The work never reached the stage where all the animals, including the invertebrates, were dealth with. This only happened in the 19th century when the so-called "Suites de Buffon" were published by other French zoologists. However, the mammals treated are described in-depth, and well-illustrated by De Sève, one of the best natural history illustrators of the 18th century. Plate numbering of 13 erratic; one shield abraded. Some rubbing to to the boards and spines, several sections a bit spotted or age-toned, margins of a few volumes with some dampstaining, a few old, marginal repairs, but generally clean, the plates usually much cleaner. An attractive, uniformly bound, unmarked set. Ashworth and Bradley, 25; Nissen ZBI, 672; PMM 198 (in part); Wood, p. 267.

Ex libris Robinet Fils with his armorial bookplate variably to front and back pastedowns, sometimes removed, and his old ownership stamp variably to front and back endpapers. A very handsome set. THE COMPLETE RUN OF VOLUMES PUBLISHED AT THE IMPRIMERIE ROYALE FOR WHICH BUFFON WAS EDITOR. This set, which comprises 24 volumes of the Histoire Naturelle, 6 volumes of the Supplément, and 4 volumes of the Mineraux, represents the complete run of volumes published at the Imprimerie Royale and for which Buffon acted as editor. Two additional volumes sometimes present are lacking here. They are the fifth and final volume of the Mineraux otherwise known as the Traité de l'aimant, published at the Impremerie des Batiments du Roi (rather than the Impremerie Royale) in 1788, and the seventh and final volume of the Supplément, published in 1789 after Buffon's death. After Buffon's death work was carried on by Bernard Germain de Lacépède, who published 8 further volumes on egg-laying quadrupeds, snakes, fishes, and cetaceans between 1788 and 1804. The last set to pass through our hands included these 10 additional volumes bound slightly differently - due to the publishing span - to the 34 original volumes such as those offered here. Buffon "was the first to present the universe as one complete whole and to find no phenomenon calling for any but a purely scientific explanation" (PMM). "Buffon's work is of exceptional importance because of its diversity, richness, originality, and influence. Buffon was among the first to create an autonomous science, free of any theological influence. He emphasized the importance of natural history and the great length of geological time. He envisioned the nature of science and understood the roles of paleontology, zoological geography, and animal psychology. He realised both the necessity of transformism and its difficulties" (DSB). The "most celebrated treatise on animals ever produced" (Dinber), also represents the birth of evolutionary theory. "Georges Buffon set forth his general views on species classification in the first volume of his Histoire Naturelle. Buffon objected to the so-called 'artificial' classifications of Andrea Cesalpino and Carolus Linnaeus, stating that in nature the chain of life has small gradations from one type to another and that the discontinuous categories are all artificially constructed by mankind. Buffon suggested that all organic species may have descended from a small number of primordial types; this is an evolution predominantly from more perfect to less perfect forms" (Parkinson).

10 volumes, folio (18 1/2 x 13 1/4 in.; 464 x 343 mm). 973 fine hand-colored plates drawn and engraved by François Nicolaus Martinet under the supervision of Edme Daubenton, text within decorative borders. Contemporary half red straight-grained morocco (extremities scuffed, bookplates removed from the front paste-downs). Provenance: George M. Pflaumer. "Ranks still as one of the most important of all bird books from the collector's point of view" (Fine Bird Books). First edition, large paper issue, bound as often found without the 35 extra plates of animals, insects, and reptiles designed to illustrate ornithological volumes of Buffon's monumental "Histoire naturelle generale" (1749-1804). Buffon was appointed keeper of the "Jardin du Roi", later the "Jardin des Plantes", and the collection connected with it, the "Cabinet du Roi" in 1739. He augmented the collection of birds exponentially, increasing it to more than 800 species gathered from all four corners of the globe. In 1765 at Buffon's direction, Martinet began drawing and painting the collection, and engraved the plates under the supervision of Edme Daubenton. In1770 the first volume devoted to birds was published: "Its popularity was primarily assured by Buffon's great literary ability which allowed him to present even the most difficult topics in such sparkling style, in such a universally understandable form, and so fascinating a manner that, as was said, even ladies found amusement in reading about them.the special merit of the work is principally due to the fact that. it was the first to create interest in Nature and natural history in wide circles" (Anker). Buffon's "Oiseaux." was ultimately issued in four formats: the large and ordinary paper folio sets were issued with hand-colored plates by and after Francois Martinet. Quarto and twelve-mo issues were also produced, illustrated with a series of black and white plates drawn by de Seve. Anker 76; "Fine Bird Books" 83; McGill/Wood 267; Nissen IVB 158; Zimmer 104-106.
