Di famiglia oriunda toscana, il Sismondi (Ginevra, 1773-1842) fu stimato storico, economista e letterato. Esule a Pescia tra il 1795 e il 1800, ove fu arrestato due volte con l'accusa di giacobinismo, fu assiduo propugnatore dell'aspetto umano della scienza economica, in ciò mostrandosi quasi un antesignano del pensiero socialista. Rifacendosi alla posizione etica di Bentham e di Gioja, fu avverso alle teorie dello Smith, puntando ad un'equa distribuzione della ricchezza tra le varie forze produttive. Il presente testo costituisce un excursus, dalla caduta dell'Impero Romano al 1805, sulla evoluzione del pensiero in Italia. 450 gr.

Edizione originale di questa importante opera storiografica del Sismondi, improntata al pensiero liberale nell'analisi della storia italiana, considerata, sulla lunga durata, come un progressivo tentativo di affrancamento dal dominio straniero, dall'epoca di Federico Barbarossa sino al 1814. L'opera, costituente una sorta di compendio della più voluminosa Histoire des Républiques Italiennes du Moyen Age, esercitò un decisivo influsso sul pensiero politico e storiografico del Risorgimento italiano. Il Sismondi (Ginevra, 1773-1842), fu storico, letterato, critico ed economista, frequentatore e amico di Madame de Staël e di Manzoni, avversario e poi sostenitore di Napoleone.
