Full wavy crossed grain dark blue calf, gilt double ruled borders, elaborate gilt diamond and triangle design with a centre crest on both boards, gilt panelled backstrip with two trees therein, edges ruled, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, signed in gilt on the lower front dentelle 'Marcus Ward & Co., pale blue endpapers, bookplate on the front pastedown of James Forsythe Wilson, Belfast with the motto 'ut sementem feceris ita et metes' furthermore the crest on the covers is that of James Forsythe Wilson. There is light foxing to the endpapers and slight fading of the backstrip otherwise a magnificent Marcus Ward binding probably dating to 1885. Forsythe was a friend of John Vinycombe who was Head of the Book Binding and Colour Printing Department of Marcus Ward. First edition. Signed by Author(s).
