Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Szyk, Arthur (illustrateur). Limited edition. A limited edition of 1,000, this collection of Arthur Szyk's work was inscribed by the artist to each subscriber. Lengthy (17 page) Prefatory remarks by Strothers Burt. Frontis plus four more full color plates and 74 monochrome lithographic drawings in sepia. The color plates are lovely works showing the people and symbols of America, Russia, France and England, with brilliant colors and painted in his amazing miniaturist detail. Large 4to (9" x 12 1/2"), full black morocco. Handmade endpapers match the paper-covered slipcase, done in a geometric design not unlike Batik. Fine, no previous owner's marks. Box is slightly faded at one end, light wear to the rounded slipcase guides at top and bottom. Szyk is best known for his scathing indictments of the Nazis and this contains much of that work, including the famous "Murder, Inc" with Hitler, Mussolini and Hirohito along with anti-Axis and anti-Nazi caricatures and cartoons. All color plates mounted. Printed on letterpress. The plate names say it all: Schicklgruber-Lohengrin, Hitler's Birthday in Tokyo, The Cheerful Idiots, The Superkraut, etc. In 1940, Szyk was living in New York City and this work, as it first appeared in top magazines of the day, helped elicit the U.S. to see the reality of what the Nazis were doing to his fellow Jews. This remains his seminal work, collected just after the war. The pebbled leather binding is often found in less than fine condition, this is an exceptional copy. Inscribed to Grace and Willis Heath (the entire edition was hand-inscribed to each subscriber by Szyk, in his hand). Signed by Szyk.

Illustrated with 74 full-page plates, most in sepia with 6 in color and pasted in, by Arthur Szyk. The images mostly depict German, Italian, and Japanese fascists in action. One of 1000 SIGNED copies, this copy INSCRIBED by Szyk to Mr. and Mrs. Morris E. Ginsberg. Some rubbing to the spine with light wear at the heel, contents bright and fresh. Better than Very Good in a Fine slipcase.

Covers heavily scuffed especially along edges and joints. Slipcase not present. "Batik-style endpapers sound and clean as are contents. Top edge gilt. Edition limited to 1000 copies SIGNED by Szyk. This copy was inscribed "very cordially" to M. Lincoln Schuster (of Simon & Schuster). Laid in are two uncommon Szyk-related items: (1) The Stamford Museum, Inc. Presents an Exhibition of Paintings by Arthur Szyk December 19, 1948 [-] January 13, 1949 - a folded modest-sized four-page leaflet; and (2) Arthur Szyk June 3, 1894 Lodz, Poland Deptember 13, 1951 New Canaan, Conn., U.S.A. [cover title] which is a much larger-sized four-page leaflet, the interior two pages of which reprint part of the Eulogy by Simon H. Rifkind at Szyk's funeral on September 14, 1951. Szyk's finely detailed cartoons skewered the pretensions and exposed the reality of Germany's Master Race, their mythologic underpinnings and their unsavory allies.

Inside stamps and ID from New Orleans Public Library. Illustrated sepia plates and several colour mounted. No slipcase. Some finger marks to index at front, otherwise in very ggod condition for an ex-library copy. 7 preliminary leaves, 3-18, [1] pages, 1 leaf colour frontispiece, LXXIV plates (some colour). 315 x 225 mm (12½ x 8¾ inches). It s assumed that the Mrs Wiltz W. Wagner is Helen Bell Wagner, wife of Wiltz Walker Wagner Snr, a New Orleans native. At the end of World War II, Mr. Wagner served as New Orleans chairman of the Food for Famine Drive for war-torn countries. Wiltz Walker Wagner Jr. Ph.D. (one of their sons) is Professor Emeritus USA Department of Pharmacology, University of South Alabama.
