This wide-ranging book offers a re-appraisal of the origins and nature of technological change, a subject which has long been at the he…art of debates over industrialization and economic growth. How and why does technological change occur? What is the relationship between technology and economic growth, and between technological change and the social and political context in which it takes place? These are some of the questions addressed. A distinguished team of international contributors focuses here on technological change in Europe, drawing upon the experiences of several countries, including England, France, Italy and Germany. The book's opening chapter provides an overview of the main causes of technological advance in western Europe before 1870. Subsequent chapters consider: the relationship between technology and resources; technological change in English manufacturing in the eighteenth century; obstacles to change in eighteenth-century industry in France; technology and economic growth in nineteenth-century Italy; technological factors in Britain's industrial decline since 1870; innovation in the British automobile industry in the twentieth century, and ideological opposition to the importation of American technology in Germany between 1900 and 1960. The volume closes with an economist's view of the diffusion of technology in Europe. The authors show how many previously accepted interpretations and commonplaces are no longer credible. Yet economic historians now possess a clearer understanding of the complexities surrounding the process of technological innovation in the past, and hence of the challenges they pose for the present and future.
