Edition originale
First edition, first impression, of Banks' personal diaries and manuscripts from the Newfoundland and Labrador natural history expedition, attractively bound. This was Banks' first voyage, which made him famous and prepared him to join captain Cook in his first great expedition on the Endeavour. Joseph Banks (1743-1820) "served his apprenticeship as a scientifically trained Linnaean naturalist - as opposed to an undiscriminating virtuoso gentleman collector - by accompanying his old Etonian friend, the naval officer and future MP and lord of the Admiralty, Constantine Phipps, on an expedition in 1766 to Labrador and Newfoundland. Banks's journal (ed. A. M. Lysaght, 1971) indicates the close attention he paid to the full Linnaean domain of natural history which embraced not only the flora, fauna and minerals of an area but also its human population" (ODNB). This work contains a detailed biography of Banks followed by transcriptions of his own diaries, plant catalogues, and zoological manuscripts, all interspersed with reproductions of contemporary drawings of botanical specimens and fauna by Sydney Parkinson, Peter Paillon and Georg Ehret. In this study, Lysaght suggests that Banks might possibly have met Cook for the first time at Chateau Bay, Newfoundland, in early October 1766. In recognition of the present book, Lysaght was awarded an honorary degree in literature from the Memorial University of Newfoundland. Large quarto (264 x 213 mm). Late 20th-century red half morocco by Maltby's of Oxford, spine with gilt-dotted raised bands, compartments lettered and framed in gilt, red cloth sides ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, red silk bookmarker. With original jacket panels bound in at rear. Portrait frontispiece, 12 colour plates, 9 facsimile reproductions of contemporary manuscripts, 91 monochrome plates and maps, illustrations in text. A fine copy.
