12mo, pp. [4], 377, [3]; woodcut vignette to title, initial, tailpieces; small chip to fore-edge of A4, small wormholes to inner margins, occasional light marks; overall very good in contemporary stiff vellum with title in ink to spine; some loss at head of spine, a few light marks; some near contemporary underlining and marginal marks.First edition recounting a voyage to Siam by the prolific French writer, former cross-dresser, and Jesuit priest, the Abbé de Choisy. The French mission to Buddhist Siam, modern-day Thailand, was organised in response to a request by the Greek adventurer turned Siamese prime minister, Constantine Phaulkon, who suggested that Siam and its king were 'ripe for conversion' (Howgego). Choisy, who was appointed escort and interpreter for the Siamese emissaries, left Brest in March 1685, arriving in September and returning home in June 1686. His account of the journey, written in the form of a diary, 'an intimate, facile, and lively book' (Lach), was published the following year. Like many of Choisy's works it proved popular: Hume was known to have a copy in his library (along with Choisy's best-selling memoir of his time cross-dressing), and John Locke, who frequently cited travel accounts when arguing for the existence of atheism and consequently the nonexistence of innate ideas, cited it approvingly in his An Essay concerning Human Understanding (Locke ch. 3, § 15). A second French embassy under Simon La Loubère reached Siam in 1687, although La Loubère was similarly unsuccessful in turning the Siamese into Christians. The work was reissued the following year. It is often compared, and occasionally printed, with the published narratives of two other Jesuits on the voyage, the Relation of Chevalier Alexandre de Chaumont and the Voyage of Guy Tachard. Cordier, Indosinica col. 947; Cordier, Sinica 941, 953; Howgego C121; Lach and Van Kley III, pp. 1190 1194.

Cantos cansados. Obra traduzida em inglês com o título de Journal of a Voyage to Siam, Oxford University Press, New York e Kuala Lumpur, 1993. First edition of this important and early work on Siam by Choisy?s (1644-1724) with observations during his stay in Siam in 1685 and 1686. Contemporary full calf binding slightly bumped at corners. Some natural foxing due to very different quality of several batches of paper. Marginal repair at title page. Original endpapers. Rare original French edition of this lively travelogue in Siam (Thailand), Laos, Cambodia, e Cochinchina (Vietnam) and the voyage back in Europe. In 1685, the Abbot Timoleon de Choisy (1644-1724, from the French Academy since 1687) was commissioned to board a ship sent by Louis XIV, the Roy Soleil. Purpose of the mission: to get the conversion to Christianity of the King of Siam (Tailand) and get the trade privileges. Despite sharing many gifts and flattering, it was a failure. Arrived in Siam, the abbot marvels with music and strange ceremonies, processions, gigantic aquatic rhythmic music, visits to pagodas of its golden idols, hunting the elephants, the fireworks, etc. The printer Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy convinced Choisy to publish it. This diary then appears in May, as Choisy wrote it during his trip, and apparently without being reworked, giving the text a great spontaneity. Written in a logbook form, the text is very pleasant with enthusiasm and precision, and had a great success in the XVII Century. There is also the question (not solved) of the failed expedition to Australia and Java coast. Cordier, BI, 1, col. 941. Brunet, VI, p. 1094, 20721. Chadenat n°2582 ' Relation très curieuse, devenue rare'. Language: Francês / French Location/localizacao: M-11-B-13.
