With the name in ink of a previous owner: "Charles Jenks Book/ Cheshire/ April 12th 1833/ Mother". Overall, a good plus copy of this North American travel book. Daniel Williams Harmon (1778-1843) was a fur trader and diarist. His journal was heavily edited and rewritten for publication by the Reverend Daniel Haskel of Burlington, Vermont, and appeared with the title, "A journal of voyages and travels in the interior of North America, between the 47th and 58th degrees of north latitude, extending from Montreal nearly to the Pacific Ocean, a distance of about 5,000 miles, including an account of the principal occurrences, during a residence of nineteen years, in different parts of the country. . ." (Andover, Mass., 1820). In addition to a description of life in the fur trade during the early years of the 19th century the work is notable for its account of the moral dilemmas Harmon confronted in the context his lingering Puritan morality and the sexual customs in the frontier. Harmon took a Native American Indian wife but refused the traders' practice of abandoning them and instead returned with her to Vermont and formal marriage. The full journal consists of three parts In addition to the diary proper, there are two lengthy appendices, one on the Indians East of the Rockies (basically the Cree) and one on the Indians West of the Rockies (basically the Carrier). The latter contains the first substantial source of information about the Carrier language, in the form of a list of about 300 words. The appendices are omitted from at least one recent edition. (Wikipedia).

Hardcover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. Book is in good condition. Nicely bound in modern binding, has preserved text well. Fresh end papers. Text block in good condition with light scuffing to fore edges, toned with foxing. Unmarked. Map in poor condition. Map torn with non-archival tape repairs and small pin hole marks. All parts of the map are present. Binding tight and intact. Please see photos. "This journal purports to have been only revised and published by Mr. Daniel Haskell, but he is said to have introduced religious reflections not made by the author. Harmon's narrative of events and peculiarities among the Indian tribes is believed by those familiar with him, and the regions he visited, to be correct; but the life of a fur trader, dispensing fire-water to the Indians, while daily witnessing the murders it produced, was not favorable to religious emotions. Mr. Haskell makes the writer reject the proffer of an Indian concubine by her father, with very proper pious emotions; but Mr. Schoolcraft intimates that the latter were not more consonant with his character than the story with his continence. A copious vocabulary of the Cree and Knistenaw language is given on pp. 385-413. The journal of events in his life as an Indian trader, terminates at page 273, and two subdivisions entitled `Account of the Indians living East of the Rocky Mountains,' and `Account of the Indians living West of the Rocky Mountains,' are evidently written by another hand, perhaps from Harmon's dictation." - Field.

The famous autobiographical account of Daniel Williams Harmon (1778-1843), a fur trader. Harmon relays his personal experiences as well as typical frontier life in the Canadian Northwest between Quebec and the Northwest Coast. Notably, Daniel Haskel (of Burlington, Vermont) edited parts of Harmon's work that he deemed controversial so they would have a more religious bent. Excerpt from Field, no. 656: "This journal purports to have been only revised and published by Mr. Daniel Haskell, but he is said to have introduced religious reflections not made by the author. Harmon's narrative of events and peculiarities among the Indian tribes is believed by those familiar with him, and the regions he visited, to be correct; but the life of a fur-trader . was not favorable to religious emotions. . Beautiful black-and-white folding map included, which shows Canada and the northern United States to the Pacific Ocean. This map is significant for being the first documented map engraved by Annin & Smith, an engraving company in Boston.
