Etat : Fair. 1959. No Edition Remarks. 254 pages. No dust jacket. This is an ex-Library book. Yellow cloth with gilt lettering. Illustrated by the author. Ex-Library copy, with expected inserts and inscriptions. Pages remain clear with minimal tanning and foxing, mild to end-papers and text-block edges. Minor pencil marking to front free end-paper. Some occasional mild cracking to gutters throughout however binding remains reasonably firm. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Cloth has minor damp and dust stains. Mild crushing to spine ends. Book has a slight forward lean. Moderate tanning to spine. Gilt lettering is bright and clear.

The author served for many years in the Chinese Maritime Customs service, prior to the Communist revolution, surveying China's great rivers. In the process he developed a deep expertise on the Chinese inland watercraft known in the West as junks. The present volume details his rich affection not only for the native vessels and their crew, but for Chinese life in general, in all of its abundance, colour and variety. Top edge of FFEP and half title page clipped, not affecting any text and now a clean repair with archival tape. Light spotting on fore-edges. Apparent tea stain on rear dust jacket; DJ now protected in Mylar. Interior pages clean and unmarked. 254 pp. 6 b&w photos, author's sketches throughout, endpaper map. Size: 23 x 15 cm.
