Hardcover. Etat : f to vg. First edition. Small folio (12 x 9 1/2"). viii, [2], 181, [3]pp (Text), 30 leaves (Plates). Original half burgundy cloth over printed paper covered boards, with gold lettering to spine, and dark blue lettering to front cover. This volume is the sixth of a series which recorded the results of explorations in Egypt planned and financed by Mr. Eckley B. Coxe, Junior, of Philadelphia. By an agreement made with the University of Pennsylvania in 1907, the expedition was to be conducted for five years on behalf of the University, and the antiquities obtained would be presented to the University Museum. Illustrated with no less than 30 leaves of plates, this volume is a seminal survey of Meroitic inscriptions of Shablûl and Karanòg in Lower Nubia, on the west bank of the Nile. In this volume will be found not only the edition of the inscriptions announced on the title page, but also an introduction in which proofs are given for the readings and decipherment of Meroitic writing so far as they have proceeded to the time of this publication (1911), together with some evidence of the age of the inscriptions and the nature of the Meroitic language. (From the Preface). Ex-library copy, with stickers at tail of spine and upper left corner of front cover, bookplate on inside of front cover, and library pocket on inside of back cover. Library stamps at top and bottom edges. Binding slightly rubbed and age-toned along edges. Book block split between text pages and the plates section. First plate disbound but present.
