Livre Edition originale
London, printed for Jacob Tonson, 1691, Prima edizione. Scritto dal poeta nel 1684, fu messo in scena per la prima volta nel 1691 al Dorset Garden Theatre di Londra grazie alla collaborazione di tre dei più celebri artisti inglesi del tempo: «Dryden [.] was only two years past his tenure as the poet laureate; Priest [.] was one of the leading choreographers and teachers of dance in the country; Purcell, at thirty-two, was already recognised as one of the greatest English composers» (Hill, «The Sources», p. 23). W. R. Hill, «The Sources For Dryden's King Arthur», in «Riemenschneider Bach Institute», 12/1 (1981), pp. 23-9; Fredson Bowers, «Dryden as Laureate: The Cancel Leaf in King Arthur», in "Times Literary Supplement (10 April 1953), p. 244; in 4°, legatura ottocentesca in mezza pelle, al dorso titoli oro, piatti in cartonato marmorizzato sui toni del rosso, pp. [12] 51 [1] di epilogo. Prima edizione. Edition originale
4to, pp. [xiv], 51, [1]; a little browned throughout, but a good copy, rebound in 19th century half calf over marbled boards. First edition, and one of only two lifetime editions. Dryden originally wrote this play for performance before Charles II, but when the King died in February 1685 any prospect of performance appears to have died with him, although what he intended as 'the Prologue to a Play, of the Nature of the Tempest', was performed - that was Albion and Albanius (1685). With the alteration of the political atmosphere under William and Mary, Dryden had to alter it considerably, as he explains in his dedication to the Marquis of Halifax: 'When I wrote it, seven Years ago, I employ'd some reading about it, to inform my self out of Beda, Bochartus, and other Authors, concerning the Rites and Customs of the Heathen Saxons; as I also us'd the little Skill I have in Poetry to adorn it. But not to offend the present Times, nor a Government which has hitherto protected me, I have been oblig'd so much to alter the first Design, and take away so many Beauties from the Writing, that it is now no more what it was formerly, than the present Ship of the Royal Sovereign, after so often taking down, and altering, to the Vessel it was at the first Building'. The problem about offending the 'present Times' seems to have been that the drama, intended to celebrate a native King of Britain, was being performed under a foreign one, and as Winn says, the play 'lies open to a Jacobite reading'. The music for the opera was by a hand equally great: 'There is nothing better, than what I intended, but the Musick; which has since arriv'd to a greater Perfection in England, than ever formerly; especially passing through the Artful Hands of Mr. Purcel, who has Compos'd it with so great a Genius, that he has nothing to fear but an ignorant, ill-judging Audience'. Unfortunately Purcell's music does not survive so we cannot judge how far the success of the work depended on his contribution, but it was clearly very considerable. The first edition exists in two states: in the earliest, of which only a handful of copies survive, there is no prologue or epilogue. In this present issue, an extra leaf is inserted after the dedication, carrying the Prologue spoken by Betterton, and the final leaf was cancelled and reset so that H2v could carry the Epilogue, spoken by Mrs Bracegirdle. This was almost certainly issued just after the first performance, which seems to have happened sometime in the summer of 1691. Wing D2299; Macdonald, Dryden, 91 a ii. See J.A. Winn, John Dryden and his world, pp. 448 and 450-1.
