Livre
Hardcover. French language. Originally published in 1946, this history of the circus by French journalist Henry Thetard was republished in 1978. At over 600 pages it is a captivating and extremely comprehensive history, beginning in Ancient Egypt and China and ending with a chapter titled "Le Cirque Depuis La Guerre" ("The Circus Since the War), written by L.-R. Dauven specifically for the republishing of the text after Thetard's death. The book is also lavishly illustrated, with historical photographs and illustrations on almost every page, including many full-color plates. A wonderful read for for anyone interested in French cultural history. Also boasts an attractive red cover with gilt lettering on the spine, and lovely decorative end papers. Near Fine; light foxing on upper edge Good; significant shelf wear, 3 closed tears, one with a non-professional attempted repair.

Livre Edition originale
Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. In French. First Edition (NAP). Note that Tome 1 has the date error at the bottom of the title page (MCMXDVII instead of MCMXLVII). This is the extremely rare Three volume set. There were two limited editions published in 1947, one with only two volumes. That edition was comprised of 200 copies numbered between 501 and 2,500. The one for sale here was part of a smaller three volume limited edition and was numbered 1 to 500. These three volumes are all numbered 35. How rare is this three volume set? I found only one for sale anywhere on the Internet. That one is priced at $750.00. Tome 3 is devoted solely to the Fratellini family of acrobats and clowns, whose Paris appearances after World War I sparked a revival of interest in the circus. My set was previously owned by the renowned actor José Ferrer, perhaps best known for his performances as Cyrano de Bergerac for which he won both a Tony Award for Best Actor (1947) and the Oscar for Best Actor (1950). He was also the first Puerto Rican-born actor, as well as the first Hispanic actor, to win an Academy Award. To sample the breadth of his work: He played Iago to Paul Robeson's Othello, appeared in the original television pilot of "Kojak," sang opera at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Beverly Hills Opera, and made guest appearances on the "Newhart" series. In 1952, he won three Critics' Circle prizes and twin Tony Awards on Broadway. One Tony was for directing three different plays, "Stalag 17," "The Fourposter" and "The Shrike," which also won the Pulitzer Prize. The second Tony was for acting in "The Shrike." He ended that year by filming "Moulin Rouge," directed by John Houston. In it, the tall Mr. Ferrer literally got down on his knees, with his legs strapped up, to portray the hobbling Toulouse-Lautrec. His performance won another Oscar nomination. Mr. Ferrer signed his name at the top of the first front end paper in all three volumes. He also penned 'N.Y. 1949' at the bottom of these pages. In Tome 1 he wrote 'Sent from Paris by Odin (actually spelled Oden) and Olivia Meeker'. The Meekers were a married couple at that time. They wrote for The New Yorker. They also wrote a book together. Oden Meeker wrote a number of different books over the years. I've provided some photographs of the covers of the volumes. Contact me to see more. Significantly, all three volumes are very solidly bound. The pages are uniformly tight. On Tome 1 there's a little soiling at the bottom of the front cover and a slight fading of color at the bottom of the rear cover. Tome 2 is quite clean and has only light fading of color on the margins of the front. The spine of Tome 2 is slightly slanted forward. Tome 3 has a little bit of white soiling on the front and some larger white soiling/discoloration off the bottom edge of the rear cover. It also has a square shaped impression that was clearly caused by the weight of something so shaped pressing against it. Impressively, there is no wear at the corners or edges of the 3 covers. The gilt lettering and design on the front covers of the three volumes is very bright and unworn. The gilt lettering on the spines of Tome 1 & 2 is only slightly faded. The narrow spine of Tome 3 never had any lettering. The pages in all three volumes are very clean. They are also quite bright. There are a few groups of pages where the very tip of the corner got a little squinched. I straightened them out. There are tiny creases there now. I didn't see any large creases in any of the volumes. The only tear I saw was a very tiny one off the middle edge of one blank front end paper. In Tome 1 & 3 the bottom 1/5th of the pages has some light rippling or waviness, possibly due to exposure to light moisture at some point in time. However, there is no discoloration there at all. And with the happy exception of Mr. Ferrer's signature, no one has written anything anywhere in the books. Nor are there any markings or attachments. A wonderful and rare set. And what provenance!!.
