He is best-known for his accurate portrayals of Kentucky culture and dialect. Description of the book on the front panel of the dust wrapper: "'The Landmark' was the last story written by James Lane Allen. It is here published for the first time. The other stories in this volume--'The Violet,' 'Miss Locke,' 'The Ash Can,' and 'La Tendresse'--have appeared in magazines but have never been brought out in book form. The whole group of stories, in their variety of theme, charm of manner, and understanding of human motives, offers fresh testimony to the genius of one of the most lobed and widely read of American story-tellers."
