Soft cover. Etat : Good. Reprint. Macmillan's was perhaps the last of the classic or aristocratic Tory administrations, although he himself could be called a Whig. He is the last of the scholar-statemen of his generation; the last Edwardian at No. 10. The late George Hutchinson knew and served him while he was Prime Minister and enjoyed his friendship. His book presents an informal and affectionate but not uncritical impression touching on his earlier life and his retiremenet, as well as his years of power. Illustrated with B/W photos. Message to previous owner inside cover.

Etat : Very Good. First published by Quartet Books Limited in 1980. Typescript, proof copy and numerous reviews contained in a light brown card folder. Typescript. Pages vary in size, chiefly 21 x 25.5 cm. pp. [ii], 209 + additional pp. 15 inserted in the text (some duplicated) and an additional copy of the final three pages, recto only. Two pages of notes on ruled paper in Hutchinson's hand and one photocopy of a handwritten passage with an additional handwritten note loosely inserted. Eleven pages consist of stapled down photocopies taken from Spectator's Choice: The Tory Leadership by Iain Macleod - a response to Randolph Churchill's 'The Fight for the Tory Leadership'. Macleod's rejoinder was reproduced in full in Hutchinson's book - he called it 'intimately informed, outspoken and magisterial.' and 'one of the most remarkable political texts of the era, long unobtainable in print.' Proof copy typeset by Redwood Burn Limited. Oblong 4to. pp. vii, 151 (two pages on each sheet). Illustrations. Original white spiral-bound blue card covers printed black on upper cover. George Hutchinson's copy ('GH copy' handwritten on upper cover) with his occasional corrections and notes. One page of notes on ruled paper in Hutchinson's hand loosely inserted. Over 40 reviews (a few duplications) of the book, mainly photocopies but some original newspaper cuttings also included. George Hutchinson (died 1980), was a journalist who became deputy editor of 'The Spectator'. In 1959, he accompanied Macmillan on his important trip to the Soviet Union where he met Khrushchev and discussed arms control. Described as a detailed and affectionate political biography the book received favourable reviews. Very good. Also included is a folder of several signed typed letters about the publication of the book by Quartet, mostly between George Hutchinson and John Boothe the head of the firm Also a contract and an outline. Very good.
