First edition, deluxe issue, number 135 of 250 copies signed by the author on the limitation page, containing five extra plates not found in the trade issue. This lavishly illustrated guide to Qing dynasty ceramics, published at a time when Chines porcelain was only peripherally understood by art historians, remains a standard reference work and a tribute to the impact of its author on 20th-century sinology. Robert Lockhart Hobson (1872-1941) spent his entire professional career, 1897 to 1938, at the British Museum becoming Keeper of Ceramics and Ethnography in 1921 and Keeper of Oriental Antiquities in 1934. During this time, he was part of a group of curators, including Laurence Binyon and Arthur Waley, who galvanised the study of Chinese art and material culture both within the museum and beyond. In addition to the present work and its prequel, Wares of the Ming Dynasty (1923), Hobson published numerous works on English and Far Eastern ceramics, including a catalogue of the Chinese ceramics collection of Sir Percival David, like Hobson an authority on the subject. British Museum profile of Hobson, available online. Quarto in eights (288 x 215 mm). Original brown pigskin, spine lettered in gilt, floral roundel gilt to front cover, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Photographic colour frontispiece and 29 similar plates of which 9 folding (plates XIV and XV are on one folding sheet), 50 half-tone plates. Extremities lightly rubbed, a few trivial scuffs and marks to sides, inner hinges reinforced, occasional very light foxing to plates versos. A very good copy.

A very fine and beautifully preserved copy, the binding clean, tight and strong, the book remains as appealing as when it was published. FIRST EDITION, THE MOST LIMITED OF THE SIGNED DELUXE ISSUES. THIS COPY WITH A SUITE OF SIX EXTRA COLOUR PLATES NOT FOUND IN THE TRADE ISSUE. A beautiful and very handsomely illustrated guide to the pottery and porcelain of the Ch ing dynasty. It carries the story of Chinese pottery and porcelain down to our own times and discusses the potter s art under the Ch ing dynasty of the Manchus (1644-1912). The names of three chief Manchu emperors, K ang Hsi, Yung Cheng and Ch ien Lung, are household words with collectors of porcelain; and the book is mainly devoted to the porcelain made during those three famous reigns at Ching-te Chen, the Ceramic metropolis of China. R.L. Hobson was employed by the British Museum over the course of his tenure as bot keeper of ceramics and keeper of oriental antiquities and was a chief ethnographer at the museum. This is a revered work in the field. Baron Edmond van Eetvelde was an important Belgian diplomat and politician who served in a number of positions including as Minister of State, and as Minister to the Free State of Congo during the late 19th century. He was considered the right arm of King Leopold II of Belgium. The records show that only two copies of this issue have appeared at auction over nearly 40 years.
