Racinet's is the most famous of the 19th-century books on dress, and the first fashion book to use color lithography. It is a wide-ranging survey of costume through time, an encyclopaedic work in the tradition of the costume books that began to appear from the 16th-century in the wake of the age of exploration. Publication was made possible by significant developments in color printing technology, and a resurgence of interest in 'the other' as a new period of European colonialism gathered pace from the mid-19th century. The emphasis here is on continuity in traditional dress, rather than innovation in fashion, and linking costume to local history, custom and social organization. Racinet was determined to produce a visually appealing book that deployed chromolithography to full effect; to this end, he sometimes embellished on reality by adding color to some of his sources. Colas 2471-2; Lipperheide Ad52; Vicaire VI, 945-6; Vinet 2141. Some minor white paint residue along board edges (not visible when shelved), light toning to foot of vol.6 spine, otherwise very clean and fresh.

Half Morocco Leather. Etat : Near Fine. First Edition. FIRST EDITION, first printing. Six volume set complete. The title page gives a mere hint of the opulence of the plates in this work. The statement that there are 500 plates, of which 300 are chromolithographic color with metallic accents, and another 200 plates in two color cameo, do not begin to give the reader any indication of the treasure trove of visual information that is about to be encountered. Many of the plates fold out to double size. The vast diversity of different clothing sttyles used throughout history, and in all geographical areas of the world are illustrated. From ancient Egypt to Medieval, Samurai controlled, Japan, and from Renaissance France to the harems of the Ottoman Empire, this is just the beginning of the long list of styles and cultures that are shown, described, and catalogued. Overall the condition is virtually mint. It wouyld be hard to imagine a finer set. The tips of the corners of the boards are rubbed, minor scuffs to the leather here and there. Top edge gilt. Contents all in excellent condition, especially the plates which appear bright and colorful. Text in French. A considerable number of the plates are printed with the use of gold and silver metallic inks, in addition to the brilliant colors. 1/2 leather and marbled boards and endpapers. 8 INCHES BY 9 INCHES. Bindings marked Brentano's Paris. Bound in half royal blue crushed morocco with gold-veined marbled sides and marbled endpapers, t.e.g., the spine richly gilt with floral ornaments. "This edition. is known as the small or 'petite' edition. The same text and plates were published at the same time in a larger edition, folio size, usually described as the "grande edition". The only difference is in the size of the page and color of the paper. Plates are printed from the same lithograph plates, but in the 'grande edition' they are on titled paper. (Hiler & Hiler, p. 732.) Quite a handsome production of an important work in fine bindings. Hiler 732; Colas 2471; Lipperheide 93. Fine. ( One monochrome plate in Vol II with half-inch spot due to cohesion with resulting small hole in facing page not affecting any text; also a very small brown spot on lower edge of a page not affecting text).

Half Morocco. Etat : Fine. 1st Edition. Elephant Folio - over 15. This is the much less common folio version of this work, with each of 6 volumes measuring 16.5 by 12.5 inches, or 42 by 32 cm. With 500 plates, 300 using color chromolithography. This copy is about as as good as it gets. Modern half morocco over green boards is pristine. Five thick raised bands on each spine, with gilt lettered labels. Traditional Victorian endpapers. All bindings are tight. Interiors are about as clean as can be, notwithstanding the most occasional and lightest of speck. This is one of the most elaborate and detailed costume books ever produced, if not the single most ambitious such work. It is still an invaluable reference, but it functions fabulously well simply as visual entertainment, and the plates contained herein have found their ways to many a print shop where they have been framed and later hung on walls as decoration. As not uncommon among costume books, Racinet also serves up a healthy helping of accessories and interiors throughout the ages. Like Racinet's other masterpiece, "L'Ornement Polychrome", the chromolithography of this work is exceptionally brilliant.
