Norton was an American author, social critic, and Harvard professor whom "many of his contemporaries considered the most cultivated man in the United States." Condition: Clean back cover and spine; tiny, light stain at the top of the front cover; sharp cover corners. Bright gilt on the front cover and spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. There is foxing to the first four pages (up to the copyright page) at the front (heavy foxing on the commemoration page, the title page, and the tissue guard over the frontispiece).a few pages at the back have some foxing at the outer edge. Page 24 has a couple tiny, dark ink stains at the outer edge. Overall the book is in Very Good- condition.

In the very scarce original plain paper dustjacket. 31 pp. + leaf from the first edition of LEAVES OF GRASS. A very fine copy, the text-block still largely unopened, the green cloth essentially pristine. The original 1855 leaf from the first edition of LEAVES OF GRASS well preserved. FIRST EDITION OF THE BOOK WITH A LEAF FROM THE 1855 FIRST PRINTING OF WALT WHITMAN'S LEAVES OF GRASS. The text was issued to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Charles Eliot Norton, this book contains an introductory essay by Kenneth Murdock, a poem by Norton inspired by Whitman's LEAVES OF GRASS, and Norton's review of that work, printed anonymously in "Putnam's Monthly" for September, 1855. The original leaf of the poem comes from the first printing, issued in Brooklyn by Whitman in 1855. It is, to this day, held to be the greatest poetical work in American literature.
