The spine has a slight twist approaching the head, the cloth has faint foxing (more so on the back), and a tiny ink spot.; One of the greatest characters in detective fiction was Arsène Lupin, a genteel rogue and thief who freely stole from the high society he mingled with in turn of the century France. Author Maurice Leblanc (1864-194) spun tales of Lupin's adventures, stealing and eluding police via cleverness and disguises, across 24 books and other stories serialized in periodicals. Although created in 1905, the Arsène Lupin character continued his exploits after Leblanc's books and appeared in many stage productions and at least 24 films, the US films featuring John Barrymore and Melvin Douglas, among others. This book reproduces a letter from Maurice Leblanc to Edgar Jepson, who was translating the play Arsène Lupin for the English stage. Leblanc explains the development of Arsène Lupin and the psychology and characteristics of the character, consistent across many stories. The letter is in French, followed by the English translation. The two monochrome plates are facsimiles of Leblanc's letter, and both are reduced and printed from line blocks. Introduction and privately published by Peter L. Stern, antiquarian bookseller, and specialist in detective fiction. Translated from the French by Henry H. Babcock. This is copy XXII of 25 hors commerce copies on large paper, the remainder of this edition of 125 were 100 ordinary copies numbered in Arabic.
