Couverture rigide. - A. Lacroix, Verboeckhoven & Cie, Bruxelles 1862, In 12 (11x18,2cm), 10 volumes reliés. - Edition originale au format in-12, rare, qui ne se rencontre que fort peu, contrairement à l'édition in-8, plus commune. Vicaire, Carteret et Clouzot (principaux bibliographes du XIXe siècle) ne la connaissaient pas, donnant la première in 12 en 1863 à Paris chez Pagnerre. Cette édition utilise le même matériel typographique que pour l'édition in-8, sans différence aucune, mais elle possède de courtes marges et un interlignage plus étroit. ; le partage de l'édition en 10 volumes est également semblable, paramètres qui ne plaident nullement en faveur d'une édition bon marché. Reliure en demi chagrin bordeaux d'époque. Dos à nerfs orné de 4 fleurons. Traces de frottement, notamment sur les plats et aux coins. Quelques coins légèrement repliés, certains coins bas un peu émoussés. Le papier est plutôt frais dans l'ensemble, mais on rencontre sur certaines pages des brunissures, parfois assez prononcées. Victor Hugo : "En publiant aujourd'hui l'édition bon marché en petit format, vous recommencez, avec plus d'intensité encore, le mouvement et l'effet des premiers jours ; vous faites pénétrer le livre dans les couches profondes et inépuisables du peuple!" (Lettre de Victor Hugo à A. Lacroix datée du 20 octobre 1862). L'édition in-12 fut en effet une demande de Hugo, mais on conçoit mal que cette édition en 10 volumes sur un papier similaire à l'édition in-8, fut réellement bon marché. Hard Cover. Etat : Fine. First Edition. First edition, preceding the French edition. Ten volumes finely bound in contemporary crushed dark green morocco with red marbled boards, with five raised bands to the spines, decorated and lettered in gilt, red marbled endpapers. An excellent set with some mild wear and rubbing to the edges, a few scattered spots, else near fine. Overall, a bright and attractive set of the true first edition. Les Misérables is a historical novel that was an instant success and is now widely considered one of the best novels of the 19th century. Jean Valjean, a convict and victim was imprisoned for nearly two decades after stealing a loaf of bread for his starving family. It follows him from the time of his release from prison in 1815 through the June Rebellion (French Revolution) of 1832. Valjean's struggle for redemption allows the reader to examine the French lower classes' extreme poverty and malcontent that were central to the July Revolution of 1830. Notably, this first Brussels edition is the first publication of Les Misérables in book form, as it precedes the first Paris edition published by Pagnerre by a few days. Interestingly, this finely bound copy retains all of the publisher's ten original title pages, half-titles, and fly-titles. In addition to being translated into numerous languages, Les Misérables was adapted into a popular musical of the same name by Claude-Michel Schönberg in 1980.
