Aside from the binding, Very Good. This copy does NOT have any library markings. First Edition. "Considered the best and most thorough work on the moral and legal aspects of the practice of animal magnetism and hypnotism. In order to establish the context, the author begins with a description of the history of animal magnetism and hypnotism and a discussion of the nature of the hypnotic state. He is an adherent of the school of the Salpêtrière and he uses the hypnotic stages as described by Charcot as his framework. Gilles de la Tourette next considers the nature of hypnotic suggestion and susceptibility to suggestion and the importance of amnesia for this issue. To throw light on moral and legal responsibility of the hypnotic subject, Gilles de la Tourette then examines what he calls states 'analogous' to hypnotism, principally natural somnambulism, hysteria and dual personality. In the next section of the book, the author investigartes the benefits and dangers of hypnotism, emphasizing the responsibility of the hypnotizer for making the situation safe. The final section takes up important legal aspects of hypnotic practice: hypnotism and the commission of crimes, the possible abuse of the public through hypnotic demonstrations, the legal regulation of hypnotism, and the sexual violation of hypnotic subjects" (Crabtree, Animal Magnetism, Early Hypnotism, and Psychical Research 1766-1925, no. 1172. "Gilles de la Tourette was a pupil of Charcot and later chief of neurology at the Salpêtrière. He is probably best known for his description of the saltatory spasm or 'impulsive tic' and his treatise on hysteria. This work is on the medico-legal aspects of hypnotism, magnetism, and spiritualism which, at the time, were at the height of their popularity (Heirs of Hippocrates 2187 (citing the second edition, 1889).

Caillet II, 6188.
