Edition originale
First edition of "one of the most influential treatises on colour written during the 19th century" (DSB). Chevreul (1786-1889), a prominent chemist, presents the principles of simultaneous contrast - the theory that the juxtaposition of colours affects their perception. It significantly influenced Post-Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painters and the development of the pointillist style. Chevreul's interest and expertise on colour derived from his experiences in two positions: director of dyeing at the Manufactures des Gobelins, the national tapestry workshop, and professor of chemistry at the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle, an institution at which he would remain for 90 years. His chemical expertise recommended him to the former position, where productivity was hindered by technical inadequacies. Noting that Chevreul had already revolutionized the soap and candle industries, the Gobelin Manufactory hoped he could do the same for the textile industry and commissioned him to improve the colour intensity of wool. During this project, Chevreul discovered "that the apparent intensity and vigor of the colour of tapestry fabric depended less on its pigmentation than on the hue and tone of the neighbouring material" (Norman). De la loi du contraste simultané des couleurs was intended to offer a comprehensive theory that could be utilized across all the visual arts. It suggests principles that could be applied not only to tapestries but to carpets, gardens, clothing, and military uniform, to list but a few. However, its most significant influence was on the Neo-Impressionists. Camille Pissarro "knew of Chevreul's law of simultaneous contrast: he had probably even read Chevreul's chapter on framing, and above all, he effectively applied this knowledge [and] consciously put Chevreul's law into practice" (Roque, p. 34). This scientific approach to colour engendered a friendship between Pissarro, Georges Seurat, and Paul Signac who used Chevreul's theories in their development of Pointillism. Vincent van Gogh also applied the law of simultaneous contrast to many of his most striking works; although Chevreul's works were no longer in print, Van Gogh encountered his theories through the writings of Charles Blanc. Norman 468. Georges Roque, "Chevreul and Impressionism: A Reappraisal", The Art Bulletin, vol. 78, no. 1, Mar. 1996. Two volumes. Large 4to, binding as above. Paris: Pitois-Levrault, 1839. First edition of this classic work - one of the most influential treatises on color of the 19th century - by the great French chemist Chevreul (1786-1889). "Chevreul made an intensive study of the principles governing the contrast of colors, which resulted in his monumental De la loi du contraste simultané des couleurs (1839), the most influential of his many books. This book was the outcome of his discovery that the apparent intensity and vigor of colors depended less on the pigmentation of the material used than on the hue of the neighboring fabric. After many experiments on color contrast Chevreul formulated for the first time the general principles and effects of simultaneous contrast, the modification in hue and tone that occurs when juxtaposed colors are seen simultaneously.Chevreul designed his De la loi du contraste simultané less for scientists than for painters, designers, and decorators. He devoted much of the book to the applications of the principles of contrast to the various problems that the artist and designer encounter in the use of color and to the harmonizing of colors and their use as agents of pictorial harmony. The neo-impressionist painters derived their methods of painting from Chevreul's principles, applying separate touches of pure colors to the canvas and allowing the eye of the observer to combine them."-D.S.B., III, p. 241.
