Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. 1st Edition. Fine unread condition red cloth boards with gold front cover author facsimile signature and gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication; Acknowledgments; Author's Note; Preliminary Page Quote; and Index. Illustrated with two sections of black-and-white photographs and two--color front and rear endpapers illustrated with the United States insignia. "Looking forward is the first autobiography written by a Vice President while still in office. Filled with fascinating anecdotes, it presents an absorbing look at Vice President George Bush -- the man, his family, and his years of service to his country. Opening with the behind-the-scenes political maneuvers that led to his becoming Ronald Reagan's running mate in 1980, Bush offers a refreshingly candid view of his own life and times. He talks about his days as a young Navy pilot during World War Two, as a Texas businessman in the 1950s, and as a politician who met with triumphs and setbacks on his way to national and international prominence. Bush shares the full story of his daughter Robin's battle with leukemia and his wife Barbara's extraordinary courage through that tragic ordeal. He discusses his experience serving three Republican Presidents and tells of his colorful, but sometimes tense political encounters with Democrat Presidents Johnson and Carter. He sheds new light on his years as a congressman, U.N. Ambassador, Republican National Committee Chairman during the Watergate era, envoy to China, and CIA director. And he offers, for the first time, his appraisal of the beakdown in the National Security Council -- CIA process that led to the Iran--Contra affair. From his personal view of some of the leading national and world figures of our time (Reagan, Nixon, Kissinger, Mao Tse-tung) to the gut issues he cares about, Bush uses personal stories as well as in-depth analyses of government practices and institutions, to create a full-bodied portrait of himself and his beliefs. And he concludes with an illuminationg interview of George Bush, by George Bush. Now, for all those who want a better understanding of the man who could be America's next President, the answers are here in an exceptional self-portrait that may well become one of the most important political books of the decade." -- from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. "The country and the world know him as Vice President of the United States. But behind the public figiure is the George Bush who enlisted as the Navy's youngest aviator in 1944, went to Texas after the war, became a successful oilman, got into politics, and became one of America's foremost national figures and leader for the 1980s and '90s. Now, in a remarkably revealing self-portrait, George Bush answers all the questions as he shares his life story -- his personal philosophy, goals, and hopes for the future. It is a warm, human story that offers fresh insight into the man who may well be America's next President." -- from the rear outer jacket.
