On the eve of the French Revolution, Mesmer captured the imagination of the Parisian public with his remarkable ability to effect cures by throwing his patients into â mesmeric' trances, and with his philosophical system aimed at creating amore perfect human society through harmony with the physical universe. As much a social movement as a medical practice, mesmerism spread quickly throughout Europe and America, and became such a mania in pre-Revolutionary France that between 1779 and 1789 more literature was generated on mesmerism than on any other single topic. At first Mesmer used actual magnets to perform his cures but later dispensed with these on the ground that nearly all substances could be magnetized by touch. He employed either direct contact between physician and patient, or contact via the â baquet,' a tub-like apparatus which could be charged with the universal fluid like a Leyden jar. Mesmer always insisted on the physical nature of his cures, which he initially ascribed to magnetic forces or electricity; later he devised the theory of a â universal fluid' acting on the nervous system, which was susceptible to this fluid on account of its inherent property of â animal magnetism.' It is ironic that Mesmer refused to credit the agency of the mind in any of his cures, because his discovery led to the large-scale investigation of psychological phenomena, and is thus an ancestor of psychopathology and psychotherapy" (Norman Library). "Eslon, a docteur régent of the Faculté de Médecine, was the first important Parisian convert to mesmerism. His outspoken support and practice of Mesmer's techniques caused dissention within the Faculté and so antagonized its conservative majority that he was eventually expelled. Eslon later broke with Mesmer and set up a rival mesmeric treatment center in Paris, where he practiced his own version of animal magnetism. When the royal commission to investigate mesmerism was formed it was Eslon's practice and theory of animal magnetism that the commission examined, much to the displeasure of orthodox mesmerists. The present work is Eslon's major treatise on magnetism, describing his first encounter with animal magnetism and how he became convinced of its efficacy. It also gives the details of eighteen cases treated by Mesmer under Eslon's observation, one of the patients being Eslon himself" (Norman Library). Garrison and Morton 4992.1. Norman Library M4. Norman Library M77. PMM 225. HBS 68250. $4,500.

[1], [1 blank], VI, 85, [1 blank] pp.First edition of a famous (or infamous) treatise by Anton Mesmer (1733-1815) on the medical and healing use of magnetism and the healing magnetic power in his own hands, which he called "animal magnetism". His theories gave us the English word "mesmerize". Mesmer was an Austrian physician who believed that a magnetic fluid pervades the universe, is present in every living being and affects the nervous system. A blockage in this system, could prevent the magnetic energy from flowing throughout the body, which would provoke illnesses. Mesmer thought that he could redress the energetic imbalances with the use of magnetism.Mesmer did not produce any proof of his theory or describe his experiments so they could be scientifically replicated by others. Mesmer and his imitators relied on an extensive collection of case studies, which they used as propaganda for their theories. Mesmerism became a controversial issue that attracted a great deal of public attention. In the present pamphlet Memoire sur la découverte du magnétisme animal (1779) and another Précis historique des faits relatifs au magnétisme animal (1781), Mesmer first outlined his ideas on magnetism and especially animal magnetism with only limited polemics. The present book therefore gives Mesmer s first account of his theories. The notion that Mesmer s techniques did bring benefits due to his patients suggestibility made Mesmer an unwitting pioneer of psychotherapy: Freud carried out his first experiments on hypnotic patients and Jung s belief that consciousness could transcend time and space brought him quite close to mesmerism. In very good condition.l En Français dans le texte (1990), 171; Kelly, p. 285; Morton 4992.1; Printing and the mind of man 225; Vijselaar, De magnetische geest: het dierlijk magnetisme 1770-1830 (2001), pp.17-39, 68-70; for the author: DSB IX, pp. 325-327.

First edition of the definitive exposition of animal magnetism; a beautiful copy in contemporary wrappers. The hugely influential theory of mesmerism, named after the author, pioneered psychotherapeutic techniques and led to innovations in the scientific method. It "became such a popular health care sensation in France that it was as much a social movement as a medical practice" (Garrison & Morton). Building on earlier ephemeral publications such as his Letter on Magnetic Treatment (1775), this book is Mesmer's first complete elucidation of his theory of animal magnetism. Mesmer (1734-1815) claimed that he had discovered the existence of a "universal fluid" that responded to magnetic forces and could be manipulated within patients to cure illness. The fluid could be transmitted inside people, animals, and objects, first through magnets and later through sheer will, solely by pointing at them. The theory, although pervasive, was controversial; despite his patrons including famous figures such as Marie Antoinette, his detractors condemned him as merely a theatrical showman. Mesmer's medical practice was elaborately choreographed and consisted of receiving patients in dimly lit, fragranced chambers whilst clad in extravagant robes. He was forced from Austria due to opposition from the Viennese Medical Faculty, leading him to settle in Paris, where the present volume was distributed. To investigate the veracity of mesmerism further, Louis XVI established the "Royal Commission on Animal Magnetism" in 1784. Members included Benjamin Franklin, Joseph-Ignace Guillotin, and Antoine Lavoisier. Franklin's investigations for the commission were early examples of controlled trials and are among the first examples of blind experiments; indeed, Franklin employed the use of actual blindfolds. The Commission found that there was no physical evidence of Mesmer's magnetic fluid, and noted that all of the supposed effects on the patients could have been achieved through suggestibility and imagination. Consequently, mesmerism became a catalyst for early psychoanalytic theory. "Suggestibility on the part of the patient can, without question, be the key to his recovery; and having found this out Mesmer became, unwittingly, a pioneer of psychotherapy. Since his time, the investigation of how to release subconscious states through auto- and hetero-suggestion has continued, and the whole field of extra-sensory perception and spiritualism has affinity with mesmerism" (PMM). Mesmerism also became closely linked to hypnotism; the Scottish doctor James Braid proposed the term hypnotism for his technique derived from Mesmer's theory, leading to the approximate equivalence between the synonyms "hypnotise" and "mesmerise" today. Even though the scientific basis of mesmerism was flawed, it achieved significant influence in the political sphere. Reactionaries and radicals alike considered it a dangerous contributor to the political crises of the late 18th century, associating it with mind control. For the reactionaries, "animal magnetism was inextricably linked in most British minds with France and its revolution. many of Pitt's supporters viewed it as part of a revolutionary conspiracy that Britain must fight" (Fulford, pp. 57-8). Inversely, the same label was applied to Pitt himself by the radicals. Samuel Taylor Coleridge described Pitt as "the great political Animal Magnetist [who] has most foully worked on the diseased fancy of Englishmen [and] thrown the nation into a feverish slumber" (ibid.). The theory of animal magnetism remained a pervasive presence throughout the cultural consciousness of the 19th century, influencing authors such as Poe, Dickens, and Browning.
