Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. 1st Edition. Perutz, Leo (1882-1957). THE MASTER OF THE DAY OF JUDGMENT. London: Harvill, 1994. First Thus. Fine hardcover in Very Good or better dustwrapper. Locked room detective tale and supernatural horror, the titular "master of the day of judgment" being the purveyor of a weird drug. First published in Austria in 1921, by an author praised by Graham Greene and Jorge Luis Borges and sometimes called a Jewish Edgar Allen Poe. Set among bohemian artists of Vienna in 1909 and written in a highly poetic style. A Kirkus review said, "The identity of the Master provides a solution that, like that of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, is more disturbing than the mystery itself." Jessica Salmonson 's essay on Perutz' dark fantasies can be read online for free at her Violet Books web site.

Translation of DER MEISTER DES JUENGSTEN TAGES (1923). "Excellent sf and detective story dealing with hallucinogens." - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction, p. 403. "Cleverly handled. The atmosphere of decadent pre-World War I Vienna is admirably handled, as is the psychopathology." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1770. Leo Perutz was "undoubtedly the finest fantasy author of his time, a storyteller of rare powers with an unfailing ear for language, sharp observation, and economical yet plastic style. Perutz was able to describe life in all its concrete fullness, in vivid colorful detail, and to tell his stories in a naturally dramatic narrative that progresses with the inevitability of a Greek tragedy. Above all, his stories are well-constructed and persuasive." - Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature V, pp. 2407-08. Bleiler (1978), p. 157. Reginald 11388. Hardback. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. First Edition. Perutz, Leo. The Master of the Day of Judgment. Translated from the German by Hedwig Singer. [London]: Elkin Mathews & Marrot, Ltd., 1929. First edition in English. Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-256. Original black cloth, spine panel stamped in light orange, top edge stained red. A bit of loss to orange spine stamping, mostly of publisher's mark at bottom, else a fine copy in very good pictorial dust jacket, with a bit of darkening and scuffing to spine panel as well as shallow chipping to spine ends (about 3 to 4 mm.) without any impinging on typographic elements, very light dustiness to rear; the front panel, with its exuberant Satanic imagery, presents very nicely. This U.K. edition is scarce, especially in jacket. #1917. $450. The German original (Der Meister des Juengsten Tages) appeared in 1923. Charles Boni brought out an edition of this same translation in 1930. Perutz was "undoubtedly the finest fantasy author of his time, a storyteller of rare powers with an unfailing ear for language, sharp observation, and economical yet plastic style. Perutz was able to describe life in all its concrete fullness, in vivid colorful detail, and to tell his stories in a naturally dramatic narrative that progresses with the inevitability of a Greek tragedy.
