Art Spiegelman (born 1948) is a well-known American cartoonist, editor, and comics advocate best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel Maus. Along the way he has created memorable characters like the Garbage Pail kids and made many contributions to underground and alternative comix. "The Complete Maus Files" has been developed around taped conversations with Prof. Hillary Chute of the University of Chicago, Afterwards, Art "gave her free access to my [his] rat's nest of files, archives, artwork, notebooks, journals, books, and dirty laundry." It was awarded a special Pulitzer Prize in 1992; to date, the only graphic novel so honored. The first Maus graphic novel appeared as a paperback original in 1986, after having been serialized in RAW comics. When this sequel was published, Pantheon reissued the original Maus as Maus I in paperback and hardback and offered copies of Maus II in the same formats.
