Hardcover. Etat : VG+. Etat de la jaquette : VG. Photos, Maps (illustrateur). 1st. Sub-titled "The Greatest Survival Story Ever Written" the author recalls Douglas Mawson's epic fight against the polar elements in what Sir Edmund Hillary also described, in his foreward, as being "probably the greatest story of lone survival in Polar exploration." During the classic age of Antarctic exploration Mawson led the 1911/1913 Australasian Antarctic Expedition. In 1912 set out with two others to chart an area inland from his base at Cape Denison. After six weeks of treking, and 320 miles out, one of the party died on falling into a cravasse. In this accident most of the equipment, tent, and food supplies for men, and dogs, was lost. Three weeks after turning to return to Cape Denison, sustained partly by eating their dogs, the second member of the party died from the privations of the journey, with Mawson in little better condition. Although shattered by the loss of his companion, Mawson modified his equipment and with supplies for a one-man attempt set out again. He calculated it would take 20 days to reach the base, if the little food remaining, including meat from the last dog, could sustain him. The last section of Bickel's rivetting account tells of Mawson's determination to survive, against the worst conditions in the world, while sick, exhausted, injured and starved. This is an amazing story where sheer will-power overcomes all odds. First edition on 1977, 237 pages, 24 b/w photos, e/paper maps double page art title page. Blue hard covers with black fabric spine strip with gilt titles are VG+, former owner book plate to front pastedown. small ink initials top edge FFEP, text block otherwisae excellent. His sledge journey with two companions turned from a harsh but rewarding exploration into a terrifying fight for survival in an instant. At almost the same time as Scott was busily scribbling inspiring hoo-hah in his diary trying to cover up his appalling faults of leadership and organization, Mawson was courageously fighting for his life and refusing to lie down and die." ; B&W Photographs; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 237 pages.

Hard Cover. Etat : Fine. Adventure Library Edition. Hard cover, 8vo, in half gray buckram with illustrated paper-covered boards featuring facsimile manuscript of the great Polar explorer Douglas Mawson, title to black printed labels to the spine, gilt, 274 pp. First Edition. Condition Fine (as new). A biography of Australian Sir Douglas Mawson, (1882-1958), once a member of Shackleton's Nimrod Expedition 1907-1909. Later, in 1911-1914, Mawson would have the epic survival adventure to complete the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Originally a three man scientific party, he would finish the expedition alone, suffering what is described as " the ultimate test of strength and endurance, an ordeal of almost unimaginable proportions." This volume is reprinted from a 1977 title with additions, including a forward by Sir Edmund Hillary, reproduction glass-plate photographs, and a new Author's Notes, as well as a reprint of Mawson's expedition diary.
