According to Tim Hunt (Jeffers, Collected Poetry, vol. 5), the play's ending in this acting edition differs slightly from that of the original book published by Random House in 1946. 5 x 7.25" yellow, printed paperwraps; stapled; 94 pp. + 37 pp. of musical score. Good or better with "The Tutor" underlined on pp. 11, 12, & 65 and staples starting to show rust. Scarce.

Spine leans back just a bit. On page 99, line 21, the word "least" is missing. Bookplate on front pastedown. In the dust jacket, with with wear and chipping to top edge, and a 3" closed tear to the bottom edge. There is a large moisture stain on the rear panel of the dust jacket that affects the rear cover of the book. Jeffers achieved his greatest public acclaim in 1947 when this adaptation of Euripides's Medea opened on Broadway, with Dame Judith Anderson playing the leading role. It was a major success and is still considered a mainstay of theatrical troupes.

For instance, he replaces the Greek chorus by three women who represent women in their youth, middle age, and elder years. The play centers around a deeply flawed but strong and powerful heroine with themes of racism, sexism, political power, and justice. Robinson Jeffers (1887 - 1962) was an American poet best known for his work about the central California coast.

Black cloth-backed orange boards with gilt lettering. According to the Collected Letters Vol III, page 402, this edition of Medea "was chosen by the American Institute of Graphic Arts as one of the four most beautifully made books of the new season." Previous owner's bookplate taped to front pastedowns, otherwise very good or better with minute bumps to front corners.

First edition. SCARCE FIRST ISSUE with pages 99-100 intregal and line 21, which should read "least," missing. ASSOCIATION COPY with ownership signature of poet and author JOHN FREDERICK NIMS on front endpaper and with his penciled comments and notations. Nims was an editor at Poetry Magazine when 4 of Jeffers poems appeared in the October 1947 issue and was one of the translators of EURIPIDES III: FOUR TRAGEDIES (1958). Some of his comments herein indicate lines from (or not) Euripides. 8vo copper-stamped quarter black cloth, orange paper boards; top edge black (the American Institute of Graphic Arts called it "one of the four most beautifully made books of the new season.") Near fine in good to very good dust jacket with only shallow chipping but internally repaired/reinforced with white cloth tape.
